DeSales becomes just the fifth Louisville school to win back-to-back football state titles and is the only one to win the 2A division.  These accolades are a testament to the hard work and determination of these students, their coaches and the community that supports them.

Mason Lane Bridge

The February 20th groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for the Mason Lane Bridge has been canceled due to the weather conditions.  It will be rescheduled at a later date. Work is scheduled to replace the structurally deficient single lane Mason Lane bridge with a new two-lane structure. The span will be 21 feet long. The bridge is about 500 feet southwest of the West Manslick Road intersection and is the only direct access to West Manslick from Mason. The project cost is $319,800 and work will take 6 to 8 weeks.

 Mt. Holly Road

The improvements for adding sidewalks and making drainage improvements on the south side of Mt. Holly Rd between Nola Drive and Fox Ave. have been temporarily delayed due to the weather conditions.

The multiple daytime closures from 9:00 am til 3:00 pm of the south lane with the north lane remaining open all day will resume when the weather improves.

“I ask everyone to be patient as we move forward with these exciting construction projects,” says CW Vicki Aubrey-Welch.

Track Progress of Snow Removal throughout the Winter with Online Map

The Louisville Metro Snow Team is made up nearly 300 employees from four agencies. The Snow Team uses 160 pieces of equipment to clear 1,362 miles of road in Louisville. The total two-lane miles covered by crews on designated snow routes equals 2,721.

Louisville's snow routes focus on major roads, school and TARC bus routes, arteries to local employers and hospital and emergency routes.

We know the crews are working hard to keep the roadways safe for everyone. Please click here to view a map of the snow removal progress.

Protect your Home in the Upcoming Record Cold

As the temperatures drop over the next few days, please remember to let a small flow of water run from faucets which have any tendency to freeze.  Running cold water through the pipe - even at a trickle – helps prevent freezing and major damage and expense.

As the temperature drops, now is also the ideal time to find, and tag, your water shut-off valve.  A video at this link shows you how: http://www.louisvillewater.com/newsroom/where-your-water-shut-valve.    Your water shut-off valve controls the water coming into your home, allowing you to turn it off in the event of a leak or water line break. During the extreme cold weather in 2014, Louisville Water Company received hundreds of calls from customers after their private water lines had burst.  Leaving a small drip of water and locating your water shut off valve can help avoid those problems over the next few days.

Winter Driving Tips

Here are a few simple steps to help keep you on the road and less stressed:

  • Avoid travel unless necessary when winter weather is in your area.
  • Slow down.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Leave early – allow more travel time; expect delays.
  • Increase distance between vehicles – it takes 4-10 times longer to stop on snow covered or icy roadways. For every 10mph you're traveling, you should give yourself 4 car lengths of space.
  • If you feel your tires start to slip, do not panic and slam on the brakes -- this removes traction from your tires and takes away the ability to control your vehicle. If braking is required and your vehicle comes with an anti-lock brake system, brake with steady, even pressure. If your car doesn't have ABS, you should pump the brakes by quickly braking again and again.
  • If you are approaching a snow-covered corner, you should begin a steady braking as you approach the turn. Once in the corner, ease off the brakes and use the car's remaining traction to steer through the turn.
  • Don't stop if you can avoid it. If you have enough space to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do so.
  • Turn on your vehicle’s headlamps. Remove any dirt, mud or snow.
  • Use caution on bridges and overpasses as they are susceptible to freezing before roadways.
  • Avoid using cruise control – cruise can cause the vehicle’s wheels to continue turning on a slippery surface when speed needs to be decreased.
  • Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas in the event you are stranded for an extended period of time.
  • Charge your cellular phone prior to departure.
  • Take a blanket.

Notify a family member or a friend of your travel plans prior to departure – if your travel is interrupted, someone will know.

Orange Flag Alert

With the Louisville area experiencing temperatures in the single digits, the Kentucky Humane Society has launched its second Orange Flag alert of the year. During Orange Flag alerts, KHS reminds pet owners to bring their pets indoors.

“No dog should be outside in these extreme weather conditions,” says Justine Saudan, KHS Strategic Initiatives Director. “Dogs need to be brought inside, as the plunging temperatures and wind chill can be deadly.”

For dog owners who are unable to bring their pets inside, the KHS Fern Creek Pet Resort is offering free room and board through February 20th. Check out is by 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. Space is limited and owners need to call to reserve their pets’ stay at 502-499-1910.
