State of the City Address Jan. 29

Mayor Greg Fischer would like to invite each of you to the State of the City address, which is traditionally delivered every January to the Downtown Rotary Club. This year the luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m Thursday, January 29th at the Southwest Regional Library (9725 Dixie Hwy). We hope to see you there!


Metro Planning & Design Neighborhood Meeting 14CUP1039 - 3903 Blanton Ln. Feb. 3

Wilson's Farm and Greenhouse plans to submit a development proposal to request a Conditional Use Permit for Wilson's Farm and Greenhouse (3903 Blanton Ln).

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the Conditional Use Permit to be request for 3.64 acres of the 5.52 acre site to allow the owners of Wilson's Farm and Greenhouse to sell landscape materials, such as mulch and landscape stones, in addition to the landscape plants they are allowed to sell. This will be an informal meeting to give you the opportunity to review the proposal plan and discuss the proposal with the a representative from R.W. Moore Consulting Engineers before an application can be filed.

Mark your calendars for our first District Dialogue of 2015! Our featured speaker will be Bennett Knox, who will provide materials on Jefferson Memorial Forest, discuss the progress on their master plan and present information on the South Points Scenic Area Initiative. Please join us and learn about the many activities and programs available at the Forest for you to enjoy. As usual, representatives from Codes & Regulations, MSD and LMPD will be in attendance to address any questions or concerns along with staff from Congressman Yarmuth's office.

VITA: Free Tax Prep at Sun Valley

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is returning to Sun Valley Community Center (6505 Bethany Lane) for another year to help area residents prepare their annual tax returns. The program is available to anyone who makes less than $53,000 per year or is eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Services are available during the following hours: 

Tuesdays & Thursdays: 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Wednesdays & Fridays: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Saturdays: 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Twinkle Toes Ballet Class at Sun Valley Community Center

Join instructor Jenny LaWalls from the Louisville Ballet for a free ballet class for children ages 7-9. You must register at the center to participate. Students should wear comfortable clothing and ballet shoes. The class starts January 28th and is on Wednesday nights from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. until April. If you have any questions, please call 502-937-8802. The Community Center is located at 6505 Bethany Lane.

Seasonal Job Fair at the Zoo Jan. 31

The Louisville Zoo is hosting a job fair to fill seasonal positions in various departments. Candidates will be provided training, should be outgoing and highly motivated. Applicants should be at least 16 years of age and should be able to work a variable schedule. Pay is $8.00 per hour. Seasonal zoo employees also receive free Zoo admission during employment, discounts for the gift shop and food concessions as well as free parking. 

The fair will be held in the Zoo's Gheens Room (1100 Trevilian Way) on January 31st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 


Valentine's Romantic Retreat at Jefferson Memorial Forest

Give your sweetie the moon, the stars and all of Louisville this Valentine's Day! Bring them to the forest for a romantic candlelit hike that ends with a beautiful view of the lights of Louisville. The hike's destination is the Forest's beautiful Manor House, where you'll be greeted by a roaring fire, hot beverages and desserts provided by local bakeries. Reservations must be made by Monday, February 9th by calling (502) 368-5404. The cost is $30 per couple. There will be hikes on both Friday, February 13th and Saturday, February 14th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Serving on a board or commission is a great way to utilize your talents. We hope you will consider volunteering your time with us and encourage you to browse the openings regularly for opportunities that would best utilize your experience and knowledge. We have approximately 100 boards and commissions with many areas of interest. Current vacancies include: Parks Foundation, Planning Commission, Metropolitan Business Development, Family Health Centers, Civil Service Board, Criminal Justice Commission Board, Brightside and Community Action Partnership Administering Board, just to name a few. It is important that these boards have adequate representation from all areas of town, including District 12 and Southwest Louisville, as they are responsible for evaluating many important decisions that impact our city and its citizens.
