From Vicki's Desk

Congrats and Caring, The D13 Way

I often enjoy using this part of our newsletter to share some personal thoughts. This week offers a chance to congratulate a fine young man from District 13, and to remind folks we have an opportunity to support a community volunteer--"one of our own"--who needs our love and help as she faces a major medical challenge.

Let's Congratulate Eagle Scout Chris Portman

Christopher Portman has been advanced to the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations Chris and thank you for your fabulous bridge project.

Leaf Disposal Reminders

The Solid Waste Management Division of Metro Public Works recommends using the following disposal methods before using the drop-off service:

Best: For a healthier lawn, mulch leaves with a lawnmower and let them settle into the turf system along with grass clippings and trimmings as a natural fertilizer and weed deterrent.

Next Best: Place yard waste in 20-40 gallon reusable containers with handles (old style trash cans) to reduce the need for continual purchase of single-use bags.

Still Good: Place yard waste in paper bags designed for yard waste collection or in compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards.

Residents who do not mulch leaves into their lawns or use curbside pick-up options may opt to dispose of them at drop-off sites Tues-Saturday through December 6. The service will not be available on Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving.

Leaf drop-off is a joint service of Metro Public Works and Metro Parks. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used for transport must be disposed of off-site by residents. The leaves will be used as compost material.

Drop-off will be available Tuesday – Saturday at the following locations and hours:

  • Public Works Yard: 10500 Lower River Road (at Bethany Lane)  9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Public Works East District Yard: 595 Hubbards Lane, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Public Works Waste Reduction Center: 636 Meriwether Avenue, Tuesday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Be a Santa to a Senior

Many seniors in our area, who are alone or in need, will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the Be a Santa to a Senior® program. The local Home Instead Senior Care® office is sponsoring this program for seniors who are spending the holidays alone, or with no plans for celebration.
