Leaf Drop-off Sites to Open November 11

Three leaf disposal locations will be available

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at drop-off sites Tuesday through Saturday each week November 11 through December 6. The service will not be available on Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving.

Leaf drop-off is a joint service of Metro Public Works and Metro Parks. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used for transport must be disposed of off-site by residents. The leaves will be used as compost material.

The Solid Waste Management Division of Metro Public Works recommends residents consider one of the following disposal methods before using the drop-off service:

Best: For a healthier lawn, mulch leaves with a lawnmower and let them settle into the turf system along with grass clippings and trimmings as a natural fertilizer and weed deterrent.

Next Best: Place yard waste in 20-40 gallon reusable containers with handles (old style trash cans) to reduce the need for continual purchase of single-use bags.

Still Good: Place yard waste in paper bags designed for yard waste collection or in compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards.

Large amounts: Reduce the volume by using a lawn mower or leaf shredder before putting them in a container.

Beginning January 1, 2015, yard waste left out in plastic bags that are not compostable will not be collected. This regulation applies throughout all of Jefferson County.

Drop-off will be available Tuesday – Saturday at the following locations and hours:

Public Works Yard

10500 Lower River Road (at Bethany Lane)

9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Public Works East District Yard

595 Hubbards Lane
