Want to safely get rid of those
old prescription drugs or shred some documents you don’t need anymore? Then
come to the free Drug Toss and Shredding Event sponsored by Metro Public Works,
Metro Police and Metro Council on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. at 1032 Phillips Lane, across from the Kentucky Fair and Exposition
Center.
There is no limit on the amount
of material residents may bring. Businesses may not participate in this event.
All paper materials will be shredded on site and recycled. Qualified items
include documents, discs, hard drives, credit cards and other confidential
materials. Shredding donated by the Louisville Branch of Shred-It Louisville.

The Drug Toss will be done as a
drive-through event. Bring expired or unused medications, bulk or loose tablets
and capsules, or medications that should have been kept cold but were
not. Black out all personal information on ALL medication containers that
will be tossed.
For safety reasons, we cannot
accept sharps, needles, lances, cosmetics, personal care or hygiene items.
Hospitals and medical offices may not participate in this event.

LIHEAP Early Registration
Early Registration for Elderly and Disabled Residents Begins
October 6th
LIHEAP (the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a
federally funded program that provides financial assistance to help low income
residents pay utility bills. Pre-registration opportunities will be offered beginning Oct. 6th for those
residents who are on a fixed income, and who are elderly (age 60 or over) or
disabled receiving social security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits.
Residents who meet the early registration requirements may
apply at the following South Louisville locations:

Empty the Shelters results in 125 Adoptions |
Saturday, September 27, people lined up to adopt 43 dogs and 41 cats during the Kentucky Humane Society's first-ever Empty the Shelter drive
at the KHS Main Campus on Steedly Drive on Saturday, Sept. 27. The Animal House, Louisville Metro's Adoption center
also emptied its cages, saving 41 lives including 26 dogs and 15 cats.
We thank
everyone who came out and patiently waited for their adoption application to be
processed. We are thrilled that so many of our pets are now in loving homes!

A grand opening has been scheduled for Oct. 5 of
the long-awaited Southwest Regional Library on Dixie Highway.
The public is invited to the ceremony at 2 p.m. at the

The 6th Annual Louisville Brewfest
hosted by the Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA), will be Friday, October 17th from 4-10pm at

With classes out Friday for Jefferson County schools, Metro Parks employees hope an all-day canoe event will get kids off the couch and on the Ohio River. For the third year, Jefferson Memorial Forest and Minneapolis-based Wilderness Inquiry will launch free canoe trips Friday at Shawnee Park and Saturday at Riverview Park. The Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventure will give passengers history lessons and show them a different perspective of the city from an asset that’s in their own backyard, Jefferson Memorial Forest administrator Bennett Knox said.
