Last night's Mayoral Budget Address and meeting of the Metro Council
Following the Mayor's Address, the Metro Council held its second meeting for the month of May. In 26th District matters, two persons have been appointed to area fire districts: John Tillman, a reappointment to the Buechel Fire Protection District Board; and Christine Kesler, a reappointment to the Saint Matthews Fire Protection District Board. These appointments will be forwarded to the Council's Committee on Appointments for consideration. All meetings of the Metro Council are open to the public. For information on attending meetings, call 502-574-1100 or Councilman Ackerson's office at 502-574-1126.
The Metro Council will hold its next meeting on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 601 W. Jefferson Street, in downtown Louisville. The public is invited to attend.
BARDSTOWN ROAD MURAL PROJECT
TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK
Starting next week, a new entry-way FEATURE for the 26th District will be started, a mural at the underpass of Bardstown Road and the Watterson Expressway. Through the efforts of the Bon Air Neighborhood Association and lots of time and effort in the planning stages, the mural work will begin on May 27. Funds were provided through the 26th District. We're looking forward to completion of the mural as a gateway to our community. Please be careful as you proceed in the area during the next several weeks, especially if you are northbound on Bardstown Road.
JEFFERSON COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD NEWS
The JCPS school board voted last Monday night to close Myers Middle School.
The board decided to close the school, which was ranked in the first (lowest) percentile in the state in 2013, because of its low performance and leadership deficiencies.
The plan, will reassign nearly 200 incoming 6th graders to 10 different middle schools throughout the district. The 7th and 8th graders will continue as Myers students, but would go to class at Waggener High in Saint Matthews because the building has extra space. Myers Middle and Waggener High, to where some students are being reassigned, are both located in the 26th District. Here is a story from WDRB on the closure.

Aside from voting to close academically-struggling Myers Middle School, the school board voted to make several changes to the 2014-15 school calendar.
One thing that will not change is the first day of school, which is Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014. Here are the changes: - Spring Break was moved from March 30, March 31, April 1, April 2 and April 3, 2015 to April 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, 2015 (This was done because the Kentucky Education Association has meetings the week of April 6 and because JCPS wanted to have the same spring break as other local districts).
