SOME 2014 CAL UPDATES
I wanted to let you know about a few exciting things going on here at the Center for Accessible Living.
First, I would like to acknowledge that it has been a bit of a rocky start to 2014 for us and some of our consumers and customers. I sincerely apologize if you personally have been affected by the issues we have experienced over the first few months of this year. In January there was major water damage to our building due a burst water pipe, which resulted in mold and other issues. Our phone lines were affected, we were closed for over a week due to water abatement and have faced other challenges since then.
Secondly, and directly related, our Louisville office has relocated. We are now located at 501 S 2nd Street, Suite 200.
It has been a challenging few months, but we have found a wonderful space that we can call home. We are now officially open on South 2nd street. We're really excited about our new location and I invite you come visit sometime. During the move over the last two weeks, many of our staff have had limited or no access to email and because our phone system is changing, any voicemails left after April 10th were unfortunately lost. There has been a small hiccup with our phone service during the move and our phones and fax are currently experiencing problems. We apologize and hope to have it resolved soon. It is out of our hands and in AT&T's hands. Our emails are working correctly. Please feel free to visit our new Louisville location at 501 S 2nd Street, Suite 200. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Thirdly, I am really, really excited to share our new outreach video with you. Please take a few minutes and watch it, then please share it with your friends online:

Sincerely,

SPOTLIGHT: BARBARA DAVIS
From June 1984 to December 1989 Barb worked as a receptionist in our Louisville office. At that time she chose to stay home with her children, but continued to volunteer and consult with CAL on various projects. In January 2002 she returned to CAL as an Employment Specialist until 2008.
Barb currently volunteers with CAL through writing and employment consulting. She produces CAL's newsletter, serves on the Business Advisory Council, writes occasional articles for CAL's blog, speaks at workshops for CAL, performs assigned writing and editing tasks for various projects, and facilitates the writing peer group at CAL, Creative Collaborators. She is also consulting on CAL's new autism employment project. What she enjoys about working for CAL is the flexibility and the people she meets and works with in the course of her work.
Barb describes herself as creative and resourceful. When she is not working hard for CAL or on the consulting work she does for her business, Employcations, she likes to read, write, paint, watch a little bit of TV and listen to music. She never misses an episode of The Big Bang Theory. She also enjoys watching ice-skating and basketball. She loves murder mysteries and romance suspense novels. Her favorite book series is JD Robb's In Death.
Barb is one of the most dedicated people we know. Thank you for your time, effort and years of service. We would not be the same without you!
CAL MURRAY IS TWENTY YEARS OLD!
CAL opened in March of 1994 in Dixieland Shopping Center with a staff of one Independent Living Specialist, receptionist and Branch Manager. We held an official grand opening April 4th. In February 2003 we moved to our current location.
In 1998 the Personal Care Attendant Program (PCAP) funding was expanded to cover the entire state of KY. This funding allowed us to start ten individuals on the program. Today we have twenty-five individuals currently being served by PCAP.
CAL has always been involved with other social service agencies within our community. One partnership has been with the Murray - Calloway county Salvation Army Unit since 1998. Funding provided by SA has helped CAL build numerous ramps for individuals with disabilities in our area, plus provide other adaptive living aids generally not covered by insurance. CAL has had other grants over the years such as Employment services, Work Incentives Planning Assistance (WIPA) and Kentucky Transitions. We still provide services through the WIPA grant. Today, we have two Independent Living Specialists, a Community Work Incentives Coordinator, part time receptionist and Branch Manager.
CAL has had an impact not only for individuals with disabilities but also on our community as a whole. Services provided have helped individuals obtain home ownership and employment while receiving benefits, attendant care and becoming educated about their rights as people with disabilities. Social activities have provided outlets to develop friendships and share peer support. Ramp building and CAL's loan closet have assisted with maintaining independence in our community. And CAL's presence in the community has increased access for citizens with disabilities through education on the ADA and civil rights.

2nd Annual Kentucky Congress on Spinal Cord Injury (KCSCI)
The 2nd Annual Kentucky Congress on Spinal Cord Injury will be held on June 18th at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington. Organizations, outreach programs and specialized medical care providers for individuals living with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky have traditionally been unorganized and without a common mission. Importantly, while current outreach efforts appear to have some impact for SCI individuals in urban areas, we wish to build cohesion among this community of individuals throughout the commonwealth by expansion into the more rural areas.
We envision congress participants, sponsors, healthcare providers and care givers all exchanging information about programs available to those in need throughout the commonwealth. The community of individuals with SCI and their support systems can be a strong advocacy group given the right organizational structure.
The mission of the Kentucky Congress on Spinal Cord Injury (KCSCI) is to gather individuals with SCI from around the commonwealth to join in the discussion of critical issues that are important to them and to help draft agendas to be used to legislate changes in our commonwealth for people with SCI. The members of the KCSCI should be strong advocates for the rights of all people with disabilities and be willing to provide peer mentoring for newly injured folks who may need additional support.

TOPIC TITLE 6 4th Annual Blondes vs Brunettes for the Alzheimer’s Association
TOPIC DETAIL 6
On Saturday, June 7 the Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will host the 4th Annual Blondes vs Brunettes at Trinity High School in Louisville. Blondes vs. Brunettes is the flag football sensation that has raised more than $2 million nationally, and is played in more than 40 cities nationwide to help fight Alzheimer’s disease.
The volunteer-driven flag football game is designed to bring the passion and spirit of young community leaders together to support the Alzheimer’s Association. The two participating teams are divided based on the age-old rivalry between blondes and brunettes. Like the Association, the participating players, coaches, cheerleaders and volunteers are an unstoppable force tackling this devastating disease.
Last year, BvB in Louisville raised close to $20,000 to support local programs like Memory Cafe, caregiver education seminars and early, middle and late stage workshops in addition to our 24 hour helpline and nationally funded research efforts. This year, we have a goal to raise more than $25,000 in support of these essential services needed by a growing number of people in our Chapter service area.
