Trick-or-Treating Encouraged Tomorrow, Friday, November 1st

halloween

Metro Council members encourage neighborhoods to be flexible with Trick or Treat tonight

Severe Weather may cause problems for kids and parents

With the rain and the possibility of high winds on the traditional night of Halloween, Council members Rick Blackwell (D-12), Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Cindi Fowler (D-14), Marianne Butler (D-15), Dan Johnson (D-21) David Yates (D- 25) and David James (D-6) are asking neighborhoods in their districts to be flexible this year when dealing with trick or treating.

“This is a special time of year for children and this year we encourage neighborhoods to anticipate that some children may want to go out Friday night instead of Thursday,” says Yates. “It can still be fun once this threat of bad weather passes.”

Traditionally, Metro Louisville has held trick or treating between the hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Halloween night. This year the threat of heavy rains and high winds in the forecast have caused some areas to reschedule trick of treating.

Due to the inclement weather, here are some indoor events near Southwest Louisville:

  • Jefferson Mall, 4801 Outer Loop, 6:00-8:00pm
  • 7th Street Haunt, 2900 7th Street Road, 4:30-7:45pm (at 8:00 pm this turns into a haunted house, but it will be kid-friendly during the designated trick-or-treat hours)
  • Bingo Palace, 10713 Dixie Hwy, 5:00-8:00pm (organized by parents. Please bring a bag of candy or canned food for Southwest Ministries. Call Shawna at 819-2891 for more information)

Click here for a complete listing of neighborhoods that have altered their Trick-or-Treat schedules. You can view storm updates and weather alerts here. Halloween Safety Tips from Louisville Metro Health Department are available here.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween!

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween! Crime Prevention Tips from LMPD

lmpd

If you have any information regarding these crimes please contact the tip line at 574-LMPD or the 3rd division at 574-2135.

Third Division: includes the following neighborhoods: Valley Station, PRP, Yorktown, Auburndale, Kenwood, and Fairdale.

Address:  7219 Dixie Highway, Louisville, KY 40258
Phone number:  (502) 574-2135
Fax number:  (502) 933-3010

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

  1. Make it a habit of checking doors and windows to see if they are secure or locked. The best lock that money can buy will only work if it is activated or locked.
  2. Consider the structural integrity of the locks. Are they still able to do what they are intended to do? A sliding glass or patio door lock may need additional security.
  3. When you are away from your home, you should leave lights on.
  4. Get involved in a neighborhood watch or, at least, watch out for each other. Find someone that you know and trust on your street to help look out for your home and property and vice versa. Crime prevention is a community effort.
  5. Never leave your vehicles unlocked.
  6. Never leave anything of value left visible within your automobile.
  7. Never assume that because your car is locked your valuables are safe. Thieves break windows. It only takes a thief 10 seconds for a thief to take your property from an unlocked vehicle, and 15 seconds from a locked one.

Neighborhood Watch - This program is a partnership between LMPD and the community to prevent crime. If interested in creating a neighborhood watch contact Sgt Kelly Lee at Kelly.lee@louisvilleky.gov

Take Advantage of Free Soil Testing!

soil

The Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering free soil testing for homeowners - and fall is the perfect season to test your soil.

Why should I test my soil? - Although fertilizer, lime, and other amendments can be very helpful in establishing happy, healthy plants, they pose a risk if not used properly. Excess fertilizer and chemicals wash away with rainwater and pollute our local streams and waterways. The first guideline of responsible fertilizer application is to take a soil sample and have it analyzed to determine fertilizer needs. Soil samples are analyzed for specific soil nutrients to determine proper application rates of fertilizer and lime for optimum plant growth. A routine analysis includes soil pH, P, and K. Completed soil test results, along with a recommendation on fertilization and liming, are mailed to the client. The Jefferson County Conservation District is hopeful this program will not only assist landowners with applying proper nutrients for healthy soils but also address non-point source pollution and its effect on the community's water quality.

How much does it cost? - The standard $7 soil test is all one normally needs for a fertility evaluation. In order to promote the practice of soil testing, the Jefferson County SWCD has developed a soil test incentive program to offset the cost of soil analysis for Louisville Metro residents. The SWCD will provide up to 2 vouchers per household to cover the $7 processing fee for a standard soil test. People wishing to participate in this incentive program must request a soil test voucher from our office. Vouchers are available by email, mail or you may drop by the office to pick up a voucher(s). Email your voucher request to:  joy.edwards@ky.nacdnet.net. Email must include your name, physical address, phone number, and number of vouchers requested (maximum of 2 per household). TARC Seeking Input on New Fare Collection

tarc

TARC is seeking public comment through Nov. 21 on plans for a new fare collection system that is scheduled to begin operating this summer.

The system will allow passengers to pay for their rides with the tap of a Smartcard when they board. Fares will not increase and cash – exact fare - will remain a payment option. Smartcard payments will replace paper tickets, passes and transfer slips which will be discontinued. Free transfer trips will remain available with Smartcards but will be discontinued with cash fares, under the plans, because drivers will no longer distribute paper transfer slips.

Regular TARC users can make their voices heard at any of eight public open house meetings throughout the community. In southwest Louisville, the public meeting will be held...

  • Wednesday, November 20, Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway, 5:00-7:00pm

In addition, you can e-mail questions or concerns to info@ridetarc.org or by phone to 502-561-5112.

Metro Pace Car Program

metro

The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods.  Residents will be able to sign an official pace car registration form and pledge the following:

“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”

By signing this pledge you will receive an official pace car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle.  The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

To sign up for this program please click here to download the Official Pledge Form.  Read, sign and date the form and return it to our office.  Please indicate if you would prefer a bumper or window sticker for the program.

Adopt-A-Pet of the Week

tina

Trina is a pit bull puppy, just four months old. She is a very sweet girl. She’s curious and happy. She has great markings – white fur with a black half-mask on her face. She looks a little like a harlequin. Trina likes to play, she’s social and friendly and likes people and other dogs. She’s going to be a big girl because she’s already around 35 or 40 pounds as a pup. Since Trina is so young, she has a great bark that sounds a lot like a squeak toy. Trina is going to be a fun girl to watch grow up into a stately young lady.

You can visit Scooter at the Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road or contact LMAS at (502) 473-PETS (7387) or visit our website, www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices, for more information.
