As part of his proposed budget for FY 2011-12, Mayor Fischer has called for city employees to take furloughs to help avoid tax increases or possible lay-offs. A one-week furlough will be mandatory for employees who make over $70,000 a year. Employees who make under $70,000 may opt to take a voluntary furlough of at least one day per employee. With families throughout our community tightening their belts, all of us in the District 13 office will voluntarily take part in Mayor Fischer’s furlough program. My constituents should know that even though I will not be paid for it, I will still be working for them. Shared sacrifice of this kind allows us to work together to lessen our burdens and increase our successes. District 13 is proud to be part of the solution to bring our city out of the recession with fiscal responsibility.
With the proposed FY12 budget now officially presented—and with detailed supporting materials at the ready—the Metro Council undertakes one of its most important jobs. Over the next three weeks, we will carefully review this proposed spending plan with aim for an approved budget by June 23rd. As part of this process, the Budget Committee will hold about 15 hours of hearings with various department directors and agencies. The public will have an opportunity to comment on the budget at a special public hearing Thursday, June 16th at 5PM in Council Chambers. All hearings will be broadcast live on Metro TV (Insight Channel 25) and streamed live at www.louisvilleky.gov/metrocouncil.
Key Highlights — The FY12 Budget Proposes ...
- Expenditures totaling $712 million, with a 1.4% revenue increase largely from Occupational License Taxes within Jefferson County.
- No new tax increases or fees
- Savings of $8.5 million from salaries and related expenses for Metro’s 5,500 employees (from furloughs, streamlining operations, freezing salaries and forgoing cost of living increases as binding contracts permit, and cutting self-funded health care costs.)
Should you have questions regarding the proposed budget, I encourage you to contact my office at 574-1113 or e-mail me at vicki.welch@louisvilleky.gov. Your concerns and issues matter and need to be taken into account as we move forward with the challenge to achieve a balanced budget while meeting our community’s needs.
