Council Approves TIF for UofL Shelby Campus

Metro Council Update

During our most recent Metro Council meeting the Council passed an ordinance offering support for a proposal by the University of Louisville to receive incentives for its continued development of the UofL Shelby Campus. The incentives allow the University to capture occupational tax growth that occurs within the development for up to 30 years. Working with the University, members of the Council were able to get verbiage added to the agreement which stipulates that any Tax Increment Financing (TIF) available to the project, will only be based on new jobs added to the community.  Metro Government is also requiring that none of the incentives from this proposal can be used on private buildings.

The Shelbyhurst Plan calls for the construction of four research buildings using TIF Funds, as well as the construction of five additional privately operated office buildings. The total project is expected to help bring as many as 3,000 new jobs to the community and a total investment of approximately $450 million into the Shelby Campus.  The University is still required to seek approval from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) in August and must also invest more than $200 million in the property before any of the funds available through the TIF are made available.

Council Court Begins Week Two of Ethics Hearing

The Metro Council Court has begun its second week of hearings in the ethics case against Councilwoman Dr. Barbara Shanklin (District 2).  All Metro Council Court proceedings are open to the public, aired live on Metro TV (TWC Channel 25), and streamed online at www.louisvilleky.gov.

“We are issuing these guidelines in an effort to preserve the fairness of the process while also being respectful of the ability of the public to follow the hearings live, in print or via video.”  – Metro Council Court Chairman Jim King

Goodbye from Legislative Aide McKenzie Combs

Please accept my sincere thanks for the opportunity to serve the people of District 7 as the Legislative Aide to Metro Councilman Ken Fleming.  I have enjoyed my time here, learned so much, and I am thankful for the relationships I’ve built with Metro Government staff and District 7 elected officials and residents.  I have accepted an opportunity in the private sector with AIG and will work my last day with Metro Government on August 9.  Councilman Fleming and I are now preparing for the transition to a new legislative aide to ensure that you will continue to receive the highest level of service from the District 7 Office.

Thank you again for this opportunity,

McKenzie Combs
