As we remember those who served

Every year on Memorial Day, we come together to remember those who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of our country in the name of freedom and democracy. The debt owed to them is immeasurable. Their sacrifices and those of their military families are our freedom’s greatest assets.

Metro Parks Summer Pools to Open for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend signifies that summer is near, and Metro Parks is doing its part to mark the occasion by opening its four outdoor summer swimming pools for the holiday weekend. The city’s free spray-grounds and spray-pads are already running and ready for use. The regular summer season for outdoor pools begins June 8, after schools are recessed for summer break.

Standard pool hours are daily from 1 to 6 p.m. (Norton pool hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily). All outdoor pools close one day a week for maintenance. Admission is $2 for children 17 and under, and $3 for adults 18 and over. Photo identification is required for anyone age 9 or older; children 8 or under must be accompanied by a guardian with photo identification. Metro Parks can make identification cards for children who need them for $4 per card; call (502) 897-9949 for details.

Pool patrons may bring their own picnic supplies, although large coolers, glass containers and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Metro Parks reserves the right to inspect small coolers. To provide a healthy swimming environment, all pools are smoke-free. Every pool features lifeguards that are certified in CPR and First Aid.

River Bats

I would like to introduce you to a program in which the Louisville Metro Council has teamed up with the Louisville River bats to offer Bats tickets to worthy organizations throughout the Metro Louisville community.  This program is designed primarily for worthy, non-profit groups in our community that are doing fundraising and working to better the community.  Metro Council Mondays will enable these groups to use Louisville Bats tickets to the benefit of the organization and bring the Louisville Slugger Field experience to their patrons.

In 2013, we have five Metro Council Mondays on our schedule in which we are offering group tickets: May 27, June 10, June 24, July 29, and August 26.   In order to provide you as much flexibility as possible, you will receive vouchers that may be redeemed for any of these five dates.  The vouchers may be used all at once on a single date or redeemed individually on any one of the five Monday games listed.

In order to receive your Metro Council Monday ticket vouchers, we ask that you finalize the total number of tickets needed and e-mail your request and contact information (including shipping address) to Dustin Mercurio, Community Relations Director, at dmercurio@batsbaseball.com.

We hope that Metro Council Mondays will work well for your group and we look forward to hearing from you.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dustin directly at dmercurio@batsbaseball.com or (502) 614-4535.

KENTUCKY COUNCIL ON POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

The GED® test will be free in Kentucky May 15–July 31.  Kentuckians taking the test during that time-frame will not have to pay the usual test fee, which will be paid by Kentucky Adult Education, a unit of the Council on Postsecondary Education.

The GED® test provides adults who did not finish high school with the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills. Normally, the entire GED® test taken the conventional way on paper costs the test taker $60; the fee for taking the entire computer-based GED® test is $120.

Kentuckians interested in free classes and the time-limited free GED® testing should contact:

Adopt A Pet of the Week

Tilda

Tilda is a beautiful six-year-old beagle. She is past the puppy sillies and ready to be part of a calm, loving household. She walks well on the leash and doesn’t pull hard at all. Tilda is a very even-tempered young lady. She’s curious and intelligent, but not especially reactive. She’s fine with taking life on its own terms.  Tilda is very good and calm with other dogs but she is also one of those rare beagles who is fine on her own.  To meet Tilda, stop by the Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road, or contact LMAS at (502) 473-PETS (7387).  Don’t forget to visit our website to see other adoptable animals:  www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices.

Luke

Luke is a big kitty that has plenty of love to give. He is looking for a calmer indoor home where he can relax and take part in household activities.  Luke is an amazing cat to have because he has a slight hearing loss which will enable you to bond with him as you develop ways to communicate with each other. Even if he can't hear a kitty food can pop open, we guarantee he will smell great food and come running. He is able to understand simple hand gestures and will catch on to familiar routines right away. Cats that are hard-of-hearing or deaf also learn other communication signals such as turning on or off a light as an indicator. Luke has done well at Animal House Adoption Center; if he is asleep, we approach slowly and awaken him with vibrations.  He awakens happily and with curiosity.  Animal House Adoption Center can provide you resources on living with pets that are hard-of-hearing or deaf and there are organizations dedicated to these pets that can offer support. So come meet Luke at the Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road, or call us at (502) 473-PETS for more information. www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices.
