On Saturday, May 11 Councilwoman Ward-Pugh, the Green Triangle, and the Energy Pros partnered to host the One Stop Drop Responsible Recycling event. The event was a great success, with 393 cars coming through to drop off items to be reused or recycled. Over 10,000 pounds of paper was kept out of the landfill and recycled and an entire tractor trailer was filled with electronics to be recycled. We are waiting to hear the final numbers of batteries recycled, household items given to Habitat Restore and Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program, cardboard recycled, shoes given to WaterStep, and medical supplies given to Supplies Over Seas.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the event and kept your donations from ending up in the landfill. A special thanks to our volunteers, including 9 National Honor Society volunteers from St. Xavier High School.

This Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Building Resiliency In Campus and Community (BRICC) Coalition, Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), PAL Coalition, Seven Counties Services, and Kentucky Harvest are sponsoring a Medication Disposal Event at two locations: Iroquois High School, 4615 Taylor Blvd., 40215 and University of Louisville Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, 2800 S. Floyd Street, 40292.
At the drive-thru events you can dispose of unused or expired medication to prevent accidental poisoning and protect the environment. To help the process move more quickly place all loose pills into a sealed plastic bag; put vials, bottles and tubes in separate containers or bags; and mark out all of your personal information. The Jefferson County Extension Service is offering a one day rain garden workshop from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday, May 30 covering the following topics:
- Rain gardens and their role in stormwater management
- Landscape/lawn assessment: locating the site for a rain garden
- Rain garden construction: size, design, and installation
- Plant selection, care, and rain garden maintenance
The event will take place at the Extension Service office at 810 Barret Avenue in the morning and in the afternoon participants will install a rain garden at Breslin Park, 1388 Lexington Road. Louisville is participating in National Bike to Work Day this Friday, May 17. There are several meet and ride locations throughout town, including two in the 9th District. Meet Councilwoman Ward-Pugh and others at the public parking lot at N. Keats and Frankfort Avenue at 7:00am or meet the group at Seneca Park at 7:00 am. The Frankfort Avenue group will ride and join up with the group from Seneca on their way downtown. See all meet and ride locations and get more information.
At noon on Bike to Work Day there will be a celebration at Fourth Street Live to meet up with other commuters, learn more about bicycle commuting, visit with vendors, and just celebrate the bicycle. One lucky Bike to Work Day registrant will win a new, fully-loaded Bianchi Metropoli, courtesy of Parkside Bike Shop-- no purchase necessary! On Thursday, May 23rd at 3:00 pm the Louisville Metro Sustainability Committee meeting will feature a continued presentation by Jennifer Regan about the green features of the KFC Yum! Center. The meeting will take place at City Hall, 601 W. Jefferson Street, 3rd floor in Chambers, and is open to the public. The meeting will also be aired live on MetroTV, Insight Channel 25. With the weather getting warmer and summer around the corner, it is time to think about Air Quality Alerts and steps we can all take to help the air (which we should do every day, not just on Air Quality alert days). The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures air quality based on five major air pollutants. When levels of air pollutants are forecast to be over 100 on the AQI, which is deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups, an Air Quality Alert is issued. You can sign up to receive Air Quality Alerts from the Air Pollution Control District so you can take steps to protect your health and create cleaner air on the days when it is most needed.
