Nine Drop-off Locations in
District 19
I am joining Councilwoman
Madonna Flood’s “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign by sending toiletries
and snacks to our military service members.
The goal of the campaign is
to ask for donations from the community for simple items such as hand
sanitizer, eye drops, bug repellent, candy and more for troops serving in
remote locations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Doing Our Part from the
Heart” began after the Councilwoman received a Christmas wish list from her son
serving in Iraq in 2006. Instead of requesting something you might
expect, he asked for basic personal items like deodorant, sunscreen, gum and
bug repellent. This year’s campaign is being supported by several
businesses offering their facility as drop-off locations: Middletown City
Hall, Eastwood Fire Department, Middletown Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling,
Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service and Ong’s Urgent Care. The campaign
will collect items through the end of March.
Republic Bank continues its
partnership by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover
postage for the items going overseas. Every package cost $15 to send. For those
who do not wish to donate specific items, donations of money can also be
deposited at any Republic Bank. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart”
account.

As part
of periodic schedule adjustments, TARC will be taking proposed schedule and
routing changes to the public to start a series of public meetings and a public
comment period. Any changes would take effect in June and would be reviewed
by the TARC Board at the March 25 meeting. The proposed changes involve
restructuring of a few routes
in a way that also will result in improved efficiency and needed savings.
There are no route eliminations proposed. The proposals include better
service between the airport and downtown on Route 2-Second Street which would
no longer travel south of the airport. Service to UPS Worldport would be on
Route 18-Dixie-Preston Highway instead of Route #2. Due to low ridership, Route #4-Fourth Street would
no longer make a loop to the Downtown Medical Center. Other TARC options are
available for accessing the Medical Center. In addition, Routes 25-Oak
Street and Route 55-Westport Road would merge to provide direct service linking
western Louisville with employment areas in eastern Louisville Metro.
While Route #55 would no longer serve downtown, there would be frequent
connections from the merged route to other TARC routes serving downtown.
For more information and to sign up for TARC’s e-news service, visit www.ridetarc.org.
These proposals are designed to
improve efficiency and save costs with the least amount of negative impact as
possible to passengers.

Submitted by Harlan Higgins
Last December Deb Suassuna, a CDS Consultant, concluded the Market/Sales
Feasibility Study for our market which is now legally known as Eastwood Market
& Café, LCA. Her report found “. . .
.The proposed site location (The Shoppes at Gardiner Park) at the corner of
Shelbyville Road and Flat Rock Road is deemed to have good visibility and
accessibility. The study emphasizes the
store must have a minimum of 96 parking spaces with 128 spaces being optimal
(Note: The Blacketer’s have confirmed we
will have the optimal number of parking spaces). The study recommends the store size be 16,000
sq ft with 10,000 sq ft for retail and 6,000 square feet for warehouse,
administrative, and community space (including meeting rooms and a
demonstration kitchen). This size will
enable the proposed co-op to be more effectively competitive with the other
natural and organic food stores located in the Louisville market and allow
customers to make most of their weekly grocery purchases at the co-op. The proposed store should feature a
relatively broad selection of natural and locally produced food, to include
traditional departments such as dry grocer, dairy and frozen food, fruits and
vegetables, bulk foods, fresh/frozen meat, poultry, and seafood, a deli
department with a sandwich station, some prepared foods, self-serve hot/cold
food bar, beverage bar, grab and go foods section, and an indoor/outdoor
seating area, (the café) a bakery, beer (wine if it passes the legislature), gluten-free
foods, vitamins/supplements and health, beauty, and body care products, and
some general merchandise.”
The sales projections were very solid and strong.
The steering committee used the information in this report and
other demographic information available to us to make a decision regarding the
future of our food co-op initiative. The
decision was unanimous to continue moving forward!
A plan was developed by Bill Gessner who is a consultant for the
nationally recognized food co-op research firm, CDS. The plan establishes benchmarks we will need
to achieve to move forward from one phase of development to the next. There are three phases. We are in Phase I.
A major objective of Phase I is to demonstrate “community support”
for our market. Community support is
indicated through a willingness of people living in the geographical area to be
served by the market by providing financial support for the start up in the
form of seed money. Seed money is used
to pay start-up costs e.g., legal, website and logo design, printing, etc. The steering committee contributed the
initial seed money. Now, community
support is further needed and demonstrated when people donate seed money and
purchase owner shares (common stock).
These shares will go on sale in April, 2013. The share cost has not been
established at this time. We anticipate
that the share cost will be approximately $200.00.
Purchase of a share involves two components: spending the money to purchase ownership in
the market (your share) and committing to support your market by shopping at
the market. There will be benefits for
people with owner shares that will be spelled out in our Bylaws. The Bylaws are
a “work in progress” and will be available at the time we begin selling owner
shares.
Work that has been
completed. My legal role as Organizer
ended when I named the Board of Directors on Feb. 7, 2013. The directors elected Mike Slone, Attorney
at Law to be our legal counsel, Vernon Town, Graphic Artist to design our logo
and approved a resolution to officially name Republic Bank as our bank. This board will serve until the initial
meeting of the owners at which time there will be an election.
Work in progress – complete work on logo and signage, complete the
Bylaws, prepare for the launch of the owner share campaign, develop vendor
resources to support our financial campaign and to hire a firm to develop and
maintain our web site.
The site: Ken
Blacketer has accepted a 16,000 sq ft store to be located at the west end of
the site for the planned Shoppes at Gardiner Park. They will also provide a 4,000 sq ft concrete
pad for us to use when it becomes necessary to expand the store to meet the
needs of a growing population. We are
working on plans with the Blacketers to negotiate the terms of a conditional
lease. The final lease will be signed approximately
6 months prior to store opening at which time the conditions will be removed.
Store opening – Typically, it takes a start-up food co-op
initiative three years to open. Our
time line is a bit shorter. We project
our earliest date for opening the market will be August 2014. The second date will be just before the
Thanksgiving and Christmas season 2014, and the latest date being February,
2015.
The time lines will depend upon the
“community support” the market receives.
For 2013 our sales targets for “owner shares” are –June 30th
– 500 owner shares; Sept 30th another 300 owner shares and by Dec 31st
– another 300 owner shares. We will need to sell another 900 shares in 2014
prior to our committing to opening the market.
That commitment will include the signing of our lease with the
Blacketers and the hiring of a store manager.
For the past several months a number of very talented citizens
from our community have worked long and hard to bring us to this point – Tim
Marcum, Donna Drake, Don Goodin, Dennis Stephens, Federico Grossi, Deb DeLor
and myself.
For more information on how to support our efforts, please contact
Donna Drake at 244-9976, 418-9309 or email her at donnakeithdrake@yahoo.com. More information can also be found by

Thanks for your support.

reported between February 24 and March 2, 2013. The link will open a .pdf
document.
You can also view
reported crimes on LMPD's 8th Division Crime Map by following this link.

1.
Businesses are receiving emails disguised as Consumer Complaint Notifications from the FTC. The email states a complaint has been
filed against your business, and you need to review and respond. The email
provides a link, which takes you to a third party website, and the file you
download is actually malware that scans your computer for personal information.
2.
Criminals are posing as Drug
Enforcement Administration agents. The
criminals call the victim (who previously purchased drugs over the internet or
by phone) and identify themselves as DEA agents, telling the victim that
purchasing drugs over the internet or by phone is illegal, and that they will
be arrested unless they pay a fine via wire transfer.
3. A
new virus, called the FBI
Green Dot Moneypack Virus, has
surfaced. The “ransomware” locks up PC computer screens with the FBI logo and
claims an illegal website has been visited on the computer and the computer
will remain locked until a fine of $200 is paid.
4.
Consumers are receiving emails from the Florida Department of Highway Vehicles, thanking them for their driver license and
registration payments. The email contains a link for anyone who has questions regarding
their payment. The scam artists are trying to get your personal information.
5. “This is a Service Message. You Owe $5000
on your Credit Card.” This is the new
trend in robo calls. A message is received telling you that you owe over $5000
in service fees, BUT if you work with this company, they should be able to make
them disappear. Just give them your credit card number.
6.
Consumers are receiving emails claiming they won the Yahoo! Sweepstakes 2013 Online Award. All you have to do is contact “so-and-so” and give him
your personal information.
7.
Making Spring Break plans? Don’t be fooled by professional looking travel
mailers, websites, or emails. Get all details in writing, including the
cancellation and refund policies. Beware of companies that charge hefty upfront
fees. Check out the business at www.bbb.org.
8.
If you plan to Purchase
Tickets to the NCAA tournament, make
sure you are dealing with a reputable business. Websites like Craigslist have
thousands of sports tickets listed, but the site offers no guarantees. If you
plan to deal with a secondary market ticket firm, check out the company at www.bbb.org. The same would apply for Kentucky Derby tickets and
other major sporting events!
9. Fake Webcam Footage is fooling online daters. Scammers use the video to
disguise themselves as attractive singles. The scammer gets in a webcam chat
room to collect footage, likely of someone who doesn’t even know he/she is
being recorded. When the victim chats with his/her new “love interest,” they see
the recorded video. The two “fall in love,” then the scammer asks for money.
10.
If you plan to Hire a
Contractor this spring, hire a
contractor you can trust. Check a contractor out at www.bbb.org.
Get at least three bids, get everything in writing, and beware of contractors
who knock on your door offering “too good to be true prices” and asking for
money up-front.
11.
It’s Prom Shopping
Season! Do your homework before you
make a purchase for your high school student. Check out dress/tuxedo shops,
florists, and limo companies at www.bbb.org.
Remember to always check on refunds and cancellation policies, and get
everything in writing!
12. BBB is receiving calls on the Grandparent Scam. A grandparent receives a call from someone they believe
is their grandchild. The grandchild has been traveling and is in trouble
(arrested or in an accident), and needs money wired – usually a few-thousand
dollars.
