Congratulations to Issac Comage!

Issac Comage

It was an honor to present Issac Comage this year's "Reaffirming Our Diverse Culture" Award yesterday during the Metro Council’s annual Black History Month Program.  Issac is a District 19 resident who volunteers as a board member on Flat Rock Ridge Home Owner’s Association.  He helped established his HOA with the state as a good standing non-profit, reduced the cost of HOA dues while increasing services and achieved budgetary goals.  Issac promotes his neighborhood by organizing community events such as “Yard of the Month” contests and annual yard sales.  Other accomplishments include installing “No Solicitation” signs and motivating his fellow residents to be active in the community.

Issac has successfully completed two marathons; most recently The Kentucky Derby Marathon in 2010.  He serves as Treasurer for “Runners on a Mission Foundation" which helps prevent childhood obesity.  His efforts helped him receive the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement Mini-grant.

Congratulations to Issac Comage for all his contributions to District 19!

If you would like to nominate someone to be considered for next year’s award, please call me at 574-1119 or email me at jerry.miller@louisvilleky.gov .

Seeking Household Items for Armed Forces Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan

Doing Our Part from the Heart

Six Drop-off Locations in District 19

I am joining Councilwoman Madonna Flood’s “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign by sending toiletries and snacks to our military service members.

The goal of the campaign is to ask for donations from the community for simple items such as hand sanitizer, eye drops, bug repellent, candy and more for troops serving in remote locations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Doing Our Part from the Heart” began after the Councilwoman received a Christmas wish list from her son serving in Iraq in 2006.  Instead of requesting something you might expect, he asked for basic personal items like deodorant, sunscreen, gum and bug repellent.  This year’s campaign is being supported by several businesses offering their facility as drop-off locations:  Middletown City Hall, Eastwood Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling, Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service and Ong’s Urgent Care.   The campaign will collect items through the end of March.

Republic Bank continues its partnership by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going overseas. Every package cost $15 to send. For those who do not wish to donate specific items, donations of money can also be deposited at any Republic Bank. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.

Below is a list of needed items:

Transportation crews to begin treating for noxious weeds

KYTC

Nuisance plants can interfere with driving, damage infrastructure

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews will begin treating for noxious and nuisance weeds throughout the state this month.  The treatments aid in controlling the spread of undesirable plants along state highway rights of way.

The cabinet, in accordance with KRS 176.051, targets Johnson grass, giant foxtail, Canada thistle, nodding thistle, multiflora rose, black nightshade, wild cucumber and kudzu.

Property owners can learn more about specific treatments in their areas by contacting their district highway office. Visit www.transportation.ky.gov  and click on the map for district contact information.

Left uncontrolled, noxious weeds can grow so large that they interfere with a driver’s line of vision on highways. They can also damage pavement and embankments and clog ditches, causing drainage problems.

Noxious weeds often invade and destroy the roadside turf grass, leaving these areas vulnerable to erosion. They can also smother native plants through rapid reproduction and long-term persistence.

Motorists are reminded to use extra caution when crews spraying for weeds are out on the roadways.

Golfers enjoy special discount for early spring play

Golf

With spring just around the corner, Metro Parks and Recreation is encouraging golfers to spend more time on the fairways and greens by offering a $3 discount during March at all nine of its municipal golf courses.

The discount is good weekdays between the hours of 12 and 4 p.m., and on the weekends from 2 to 4 p.m.  The purchase of an 18-hole round with a cart rental is required for the discount.  Visit http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/golf/golfdisccoupon0310 for the golf discount coupon.

The discount applies only to regular-priced rounds and not in conjunction with any other discount offers.

“Metro Parks already offers a quality golf experience at very affordable prices,” said Assistant Director Marty Storch. “This discount will give golfers some extra incentive to enjoy playing our municipal courses.”

Golfers will be able to redeem the discount through March 31.

For More Information:

Check our website for discount updates at http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/golf/golfspecials.htm.
