Cyclo-Cross World Championships coming to Louisville

UCI Cylco-cross Logo

The UCI Cylco-cross World Championships are coming to Louisville on Feb. 2-3 at Eva Bandman Park on River Road. And it's bringing the world's best cycling athletes to town.

Never held outside of Europe in its 63-year history, this once-in-a-lifetime event is one you won't want to miss.

What is cyclo-cross? It's described by its loyal following as "an hour of pain." The sport is contested on pavement, over grass, through sand and mud, and requires the rider to quickly dismount and carry the bike while navigating obstructions and man-made obstacles. Want to see it in action? No problem, click here for a short teaser of what's about to descend on Eva Bandman Park.

So, come on down and be part of an international, eclectic group of fun-loving cycling fans ready to cheer on their favorite athlete. Click here for ticket information.

Charlie Vettiner Park Update

Charlie Vettiner Park

Construction is scheduled to begin by February 1 on the first phase of work outlined in the Charlie Vettiner Park Master Plan, finalized last year through a public planning process.  The $690,000 phase one project includes a new walkway, new parking spaces, speed humps, and drainage improvements.

The project scope includes improvements along Charlie Vettiner Park Road, including 34 curbed parallel parking spaces, a wooden rail to prevent off-road driving and parking, and speed humps to reduce driving speed through the park. A concrete walk will also be constructed, extending from the Easum Road entry, approximately 1,500 feet into the park to connect to the walking loop.

Stone headwalls will be added at culverts under the roadway to stabilize and help protect the road bed from erosion.  The culvert inlets and outlets will be cleared and excavated where needed to improve drainage under the road.  Plunge pools and step pools will be added to the two largest stream channels to slow the runoff and reduce erosion.

Additional parking areas are planned at the lake overlook and along the disc golf loop which will be repaved.  The new parking areas will be constructed of permeable asphalt and grass cell paving.  The disc golf area will have 33 parking spaces; the lake overlook area will have 17 parking spaces.

The park is located in Louisville Metro District 20, represented by Councilman Stuart Benson, but also serves District 11 residents represented by Councilman Kevin Kramer.  Both Councilmen have provided funding for this project.

The park will remain open during the construction period.  The disc golf loop will be closed during construction.  Disc golfers may park in the hilltop parking area or on the pavement along Charlie Vettiner Park Road.

Charitable Street Solicitation

Recently the District 11 office has received several concerns regarding charitable street solicitors who are collecting money at the intersection of Taylorsville Road and Breckenridge Lane. Any organization collecting money at any intersection of Louisville Metro is required to obtain a permit from the department of Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL).

Along with this permit, IPL issues a yearly calendar that identifies the dates that an organization has a permit to collect. Should you see any organization collecting money at an intersection and they are not listed for that date on the IPL calendar, we ask that you call LMPD at 574-7111.

To view a copy of the calendar for scheduled charitable street solicitors in PDF format, click the link below.

We appreciate your help in this matter. Please contact the District 11 office at 502-574-1111 if you have any questions.
