District Teen Earns Scouting's Top Rank

Please join me in congratulating Ryan Belcher, who recently completed requirements to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts of America’s most prestigious achievement.  I was honored to recognize Ryan with a proclamation at last week’s council meeting.  He will be officially conferred an Eagle Scout at a BSA Court of Honor on April 2nd.

Ryan, a straight-A advanced program student at Pleasure Park High School, is a member of Troop 377.  His Eagle Scout project was refurbishing a Memorial Garden at St. Andrews Academy, where he attended elementary school. Ryan works part-time, is on PRP's swim team and tennis team, and is a BETA Club member, Junior Republican leader and student ambassador.  He lives in Windsor Place with his parents, James and Collette Hannahs, and his two brothers (one of whom is also an Eagle Scout.)  Ryan is interested in becoming a pharmacist.

Spring Cleanup Reaps Trash (and Goosebumps)

lassiter kids clean up
Many thanks to all the terrific volunteers of all ages who braved Saturday’s cold snap to take part in the Brightside/UPS Communitywide Spring Cleanup.  A great group of folks—like these awesome students from Lassiter Middle School—worked throughout the morning to pick up trash throughout our district.
We celebrated afterwards with pizza at Lassiter, but if we had our way, everyone who did their part to help keep our district clean would get a big gold star (or maybe, in this instance, a nice green one!)

SW Satellite Office on Track for April Opening

Work is going well on the new Metro Southwest Satellite office at the SW Government Center on Dixie Highway.  We are pleased to partner with Council Districts 12 (Rick Blackwell), 14 (Bob Henderson) and 25 (David Yates) to bring local government closer to those we serve and work as a team to do more for our entire region.  Stay tuned for details on the new office’s grand opening this April.

Project Hope - Help with Home Repairs & More

At some point, most of us could use a helping hand. Project Hope, a volunteer program run from Valley View Church, helps individuals and families who face financial hardships and need essential repairs to their homes (or, in some cases, their automobiles.) Those who qualify include the elderly, disabled, and single parents that meet a minimum income guideline. Applicants should hold a title for any property to be repaired. All repairs are provided no cost. Used appliances and furniture, and help with moving or yard clean-up are also available.
Applicants are required to complete a form available through the church office (2nd floor - 8911 Third Street Rd). For information, call the church office at 935-5142. At this time, the program is only able to serve those who live in zip codes 40214, 40258, 40272, 40216, and 40118. It is hoped that over time, services can be expanded to other areas.
