  Early last week, before the closure went into effect, my office shared information with residents based on the notice we received from the Louisville Water Company.
Since then, I've heard from residents about traffic delays, access issues, and the impact on nearby homes, businesses, and Wilder Park. I shared those concerns directly with Louisville Water and pressed them for answers. They explained that repairs made along this stretch of South 3rd Street about 10 years ago continued to fail because the pavement and underlying road base kept settling. To avoid repeating the same problem, crews had to remove the failing subbase and rebuild it before repaving. Their latest update is that the work should be completed by the end of next week.
While that helps explain the delay, it doesn't lessen the inconvenience for residents. I've made it clear that the work needs to be completed as quickly as possible, but it also needs to be done right so we're not back here dealing with the same problem a few years from now.
Situations like this are not unique to our district. I've heard similar concerns from councilmembers across Louisville, which is one reason I've been working with Public Works over the past several months to improve coordination between utility companies and the city. I've also met with leaders from other municipalities to learn what has worked for them and encouraged Public Works to do the same.
As part of that effort, we're working toward legislation that would improve coordination between utilities and the city. My goal is simple: better communication, fewer surprises, less disruption to neighborhoods and businesses, and better stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
 Residents near 4600, 4605, 4607, 4609, 4611, 4613, 4615, and 4617 S. 2nd Street may notice MSD crews working in the area later this month as they repair a small street cave-in near 4611 S. 2nd Street. The work is expected to take just 1-2 days, although the permit window runs from September 11 through September 25 to allow for any unexpected issues.
MSD has already provided direct notifications to nearby affected properties. Residents can also expect temporary traffic control measures and construction equipment in the area during work hours. We appreciate everyone's patience while this necessary repair is completed.

 The Department of Codes & Regulations recently launched new public-facing dashboards to give residents a clearer look at the work happening across the city. These dashboards make it easier to quickly find helpful information, including whether a property is scheduled for inspection, whether a home has a permit for construction work, or whether a vacant property is scheduled for cutting and cleaning.

DeSales High School to Host 6th Annual Bourbon, Brews, and Bites Bash Oct. 3rd
Community event to feature food and beverage tastings while supporting DeSales High School
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — DeSales High School will host its 6th Annual Bourbon, Brews, and Bites Bash on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, from 5 to 8 p.m. on the DeSales campus, 425 W. Kenwood Drive.
The annual community event brings together alumni, friends and supporters for an evening of food and beverage tastings from vendors throughout the Greater Louisville area.
Guests will enjoy a variety of offerings including barbecue, ice cream, beer, bourbon samples and more. Early bird tickets are $50 per person through Sept. 11th. Beginning Sept. 12th, tickets are $65 per person. Tickets are available at www.desalesbash2026.com.
Proceeds support the DeSales Fr. Jude Cattelona Annual Fund, which helps fund educational programs, campus needs, financial aid and other operating expenses. The fund helps DeSales advance its mission while keeping a Catholic college-preparatory education affordable for young men throughout Greater Louisville.

 Got old tires taking up space in your garage, backyard, or other storage area? Now is the perfect time to clear them out responsibly.
From October 1-3, residents and businesses will have the opportunity to recycle unwanted tires during the Waste Tire Collection Event. By participating, you can help prevent illegal dumping, reduce mosquito breeding sites, and keep our community cleaner and safer.
Many people don't realize that discarded tires can create significant environmental and public health concerns. Tires left outdoors collect rainwater and provide ideal habitat for mosquitoes. Even a small amount of standing water inside a tire can support large numbers of mosquito larvae, increasing the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile virus.
Abandoned tires can also contribute to neighborhood blight, attract illegal dumping, and pose fire risks. Tire fires are difficult to extinguish and can release harmful pollutants into the air, soil, and water.
Whether you're tackling a neighborhood cleanup, managing a property, or finally getting rid of a stack of worn-out tires, this event offers a simple way to recycle them properly and help protect Louisville Metro's environment.
Any Kentucky resident or business may participate, except tire retailers, scrap/salvage yards, and recycling facilities. There is no limit to the number of tires accepted.
Need a tire recycling option before or after the event? Louisville Metro residents may recycle up to four passenger tires at no charge year-round at the Waste Reduction Center. Businesses may also use the Waste Reduction Center for tire recycling for a fee. Tires are also accepted at Louisville Metro's Pop-Up Drop-Off events throughout the year.

Come out for a weekend of great food, live music, live art, skateboarding, and community fun. Vendors will be on site from 11 AM-8 PM, live music runs from 3 PM-8 PM, and there will be live painting throughout the weekend. You'll also be able to check out the pop-up skate park hosted by Home Skate Shop and JT's Bump N Grind, along with a special Sunday screening of CT3.
District 21, alongside District 15, is proud to help sponsor this event and support opportunities that bring neighbors together and make our community a fun, vibrant place to be.
 After securing funding for the project and working with Public Works to move it forward, my office is helping deliver improvements to Huston Quin Park's parking area, with construction expected to start around September 15 and wrap up before October 2.
Residents will notice construction crews and equipment at the park during this work. We appreciate everyone's patience as these improvements are completed.
The project will add new parking spaces, improve accessibility, and give the entrance and parking area a cleaner, more finished look. This is an investment in the park itself, helping make it more welcoming and easier to use for residents, families, and visitors year-round.
We're also pushing forward additional improvements at Houston Quin Park, including new lighting and other upgrades that will continue to enhance the park for residents and visitors. More details will be shared as plans, funding, and timelines are finalized.
