To better align operations with current staffing levels, the Waste Reduction Center will implement updated operating hours beginning August 18.
Under the new schedule, the center will be closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. In addition, the facility will close for the day at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, rather than its current 5 p.m. closing time.
Saturday operating hours will remain unchanged.
These adjustments are necessary to ensure adequate staffing throughout the day and to maintain safe, efficient service for residents. We understand schedule changes can be inconvenient, and we appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we adapt to current workforce needs.
Residents are encouraged to plan visits accordingly and use the Recycle Coach mobile app to receive real-time updates. The Waste Reduction Center website will also show the most up-to-date information.

Whitehall is pleased to announce that it will host a program entitled Exploring Pond Wildlife, presented by Dr. Bill Dean, known as “Dr. Frog,” at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, August 26th . In this program, we will discuss how the recent water main break near Lexington Road affected Whitehall's pond. Dr. Frog will present his slideshow on pond wildlife, followed by a walk down to Robert’s Pond in Whitehall’s Woodland Garden for a hands-on look at the resilience of the animals residing there. This program is intended for an adult audience. Reservations are $10 per person and can be made at https://www.historicwhitehall.org/whitehall-workshops. Dr. Bill Dean is a retired biochemistry professor from the U of L School of Medicine. He has been an amateur herpetologist for over 70 years and has given numerous nature presentations to children and adults.
Proceeds from the program will benefit Whitehall, a historic house and estate garden owned and operated by the not-for-profit Historic Homes Foundation. Originally built in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse, the house was transformed in 1909 into the iconic Classical style mansion we know today that epitomizes the stately beauty of early twentieth-century architecture. At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s grounds offer the public multiple special gardens that are a horticultural treasure to the community.
 The Jefferson County Soil & Water Conservation District is hosting their annual Cover Crop Giveaway! In conjunction, they will be hosting a Cover Crop workshop where participants can learn about the benefits and logistics of planting cover crops, and they can pick up free seed if they preorder before September 4th.

At The Dot Experience, accessibility means thinking about the full visitor experience, including the needs of guide dogs and other service animals. The museum features a designated guide dog relief area with artificial turf, providing visitors with a convenient, comfortable place to care for their service animals during their visit. It’s one more way The Dot Experience is designed to help visitors feel welcome from the moment they arrive.
The relief area is part of a larger commitment to inclusive design throughout the museum. Guide dog users, along with people who are blind or low vision, DeafBlind, neurodivergent, and wheelchair users, contributed their lived experiences and expertise throughout the development of The Dot Experience. Their input helped the team consider details that can make a meaningful difference in navigating and enjoying the museum independently.
From tactile maps and Braille signage to quiet spaces, accessible restrooms, and service animal accommodations, accessibility is woven into The Dot Experience. The goal is to create a place where visitors of all abilities, and the service animals who support them, can explore, learn, and enjoy the experience comfortably.
The Dot Experience opens Friday, October 30.

After finding several blockages in the sanitary and stormwater drainage lines on N. Galt Avenue, an MSD contractor has completed the needed repairs and is now getting ready to place a protective lining in the street’s sewers.
Robinson Pipe Cleaning is expected to complete measurements and order the needed materials for the protective lining in August. The installation is expected to begin by the middle of October and be completed in approximately two weeks, depending on weather.
The sewers will be lined via the Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) method, which is a trench-less process that will add 50 to 100 years to the lifespan of the pipes.
Both lanes of traffic on N. Galt will remain open until the CIPP project begins, but, once the work starts, traffic may go down to one lane at times.
Before the contractor leaves, restorative ground and asphalt work will be done.
With paving season now fully underway, crews continue improving streets and advancing roadway projects across Louisville Metro.
Louisville Metro repaves streets each year to preserve roadway conditions, extend the life of existing pavement, and provide safer, smoother travel for everyone. Regular paving helps prevent more costly repairs in the future and protects the city’s infrastructure investment.

Our August 15 Pop-Up Drop-Off event proved that even extreme heat could not stop residents from supporting responsible waste management and recycling efforts.
The event welcomed 775 vehicles, with residents bringing a wide range of materials for proper disposal and recycling. Electronics recycling saw the highest participation, while large item disposal, document shredding, and scrap metal recycling were also popular services throughout the day.
Thanks to the combined efforts of residents, staff, volunteers, and community partners, the event achieved an overall 58% diversion rate, keeping a significant amount of material out of the landfill through recycling and reuse programs.
A key contributor to the event's success was our ongoing partnership with Goodwill, which helps extend the life of reusable materials while supporting community services. The event also set a new benchmark for bulky plastics recycling, collecting more bulky plastic items than any previous Pop-Up Drop-Off event.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the staff, volunteers, and partners who worked in extremely hot conditions to serve residents and ensure the event ran smoothly. Their dedication helped deliver another successful opportunity for our community to recycle more and waste less.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make a positive environmental impact. Together, we continue to move toward a more sustainable future.
The next event will be on Saturday, September 19 at Sun Valley Park and Ashby Lane Baptist Church. All events are 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
POP UP DROP OFF
This is a friendly reminder to property owners that you are responsible for the maintenance of trees/sidewalks in the ROW adjacent to your homes and businesses. Our office is also coordinating with Trees Louisville to explore how our office can assist with weeding, expanding tree wells, and overall beautification in the district. We also want to give a special thanks to LuvIt Landscaping. We've been contracting with them over the years for beautification efforts across our district including Grinstead Dr, Lexington Rd, Payne St calmer, Frankfort Ave bus stops, and the Chicken Walk on Brownsboro Rd.
