This past Saturday, Councilman Ken Herndon joined the Newburg Day Parade in support of Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin. During the event, he also had the opportunity to connect with Congressman Morgan McGarvey and pose for a photo, highlighting the strong partnerships working to serve our community.
During Beecher Terrace Weekend, our office was proud to honor former Beecher Terrace resident and longtime community organizer Mitzi Wilson with an honorary street sign. This special recognition celebrated her dedication to the neighborhood and the lasting impact she has made through her service and leadership in the community.
Councilman Ken Herndon joined a small roundtable discussion with a Vietnamese delegation hosted through the Congressional Office for International Leadership. Delegates presented insights from their visit, highlighting their experiences and the lessons they gained throughout the week.

  Last Thursday, the Democratic Caucus highlighted key infrastructure investments that are helping make Louisville safer as students head back to school.
From Rapid Flashing Beacons that help pedestrians cross busy streets safely to roadway upgrades and accessibility improvements, these projects are enhancing safety and mobility for everyone who walks, bikes, drives, or uses public transit.

The Louisville Metro Council will meet on Thursday, August 13, at 6:00 p.m. All Metro Council meetings are open to the public and are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 601 W. Jefferson Street. Residents are encouraged to attend and stay informed about issues affecting our community.

New TARC Network Launching in August
 The New TARC Network launches on August 2, 2026. This will be a historic, once-in-a-lifetime change for our community with new route names and numbers, new bus-stop locations—with a significant number of existing stops being removed to improve reliability—better frequencies of service, and a new Downtown Transit Center!

FGP Program Heads back to School
 If you’re 55 yrs or older and want to share your experience and compassion, you have what it takes to be a Foster Grandparent.
As a Foster Grandparent, you’re a role model, a mentor, and a friend. Serving at local organizations—including faith-based groups, Head Start Centers, schools, day care centers and other youth facilities that serve children with exceptional needs—you help children learn to read, provide one-on-one tutoring, and guide children at a critical time in their lives. Put simply, you give the kind of comfort and love that sets a child on the path toward a successful future.
Foster Grandparents have to be income eligible and serve up to 20 hours per week. In return, you’ll receive a tax-free, hourly stipend, transportation reimbursement, pre-service orientation, training from the organization where you serve, and supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty.

LGBTQIA+ Youth Empowerment Camp Registration Open
Louisville Youth Group is excited to announce its upcoming LGBTQIA+ Youth Empowerment Camp, taking place September 25-27. This weekend experience brings together LGBTQIA+ youth from across the Kentuckiana region for community building, leadership development, and fun in an affirming and supportive environment.
Camp programming is designed to help participants build self-confidence, strengthen leadership skills, connect with peers, and learn from adult mentors who provide guidance, understanding, and insight into LGBTQIA+ history and community.

Beginning Aug. 18, the Waste Reduction Center will adjust its operating hours to support daily operations and ensure consistent service for residents.
Under the new schedule, the center will be closed from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and will close at 4:30 p.m. on those days, rather than its current 5 p.m. closing time. Saturday hours will remain unchanged.
These adjustments will help ensure adequate staffing throughout the day and allow the center to continue providing safe and efficient service to residents.
Residents are encouraged to plan visits accordingly and use the Recycle Coach mobile app for real-time updates. The Waste Reduction Center website will also provide the latest operating information.

- Bring carts back onto your property after collection.
- Avoid overloading carts and make sure lids close.
- Label carts with your address and save the serial number.
- Keep carts clean and in good condition.
- Report damaged carts and request repairs when needed.

What is LIHEAP Summer Subsidy?
LIHEAP Subsidy is for all eligible households for home cooling costs. Subsidy benefits can be applied as a credit on your utility account. The one-time benefit amount is determined by your housing category, fuel type, and income level. Summer Subsidy is an electric benefits only program.
Who is eligible?
LIHEAP Summer Subsidy is available to Jefferson County residents who are within 150% of Federal Poverty Guidelines (see table).
Applicant must be responsible for home energy utility costs or pay energy costs if utilities are included as an undesignated portion of rent.

 Registration for the AMPED Music Academy Fall Semester is officially open! Students and families are invited to join another exciting semester filled with music, creativity, learning, and fun.
Returning Students
Families whose students have participated in AMPED Music Academy within the past six months should check the email address previously used for registration. A personalized registration link has been sent to returning students, allowing families to review and update existing information before completing enrollment.
If you do not see the email, please check your spam or junk folder. Families may also use the public application if needed to avoid registration delays.
New Students
Students who are new to AMPED Music Academy, or who have not participated within the past six months, can apply using the public registration form:

 Join RPOP for an in-person lender education session focused on the 25 new homes being built on Elliott Avenue through RPOP CLT's first homeownership investment. This session will provide lenders with an overview of Community Land Trust homeownership, buyer eligibility requirements, financing considerations, and opportunities to support future homeowners in Russell. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to serve prospective CLT buyers and help expand access to affordable homeownership.
