District 3 Capital Updates: Parks, Paving, and Sidewalks

Now that the budget has been finalized, and the 2027 Fiscal Year has begun, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Works and Assets has determined, based on a rating system, which roads will be repaved and which sidewalks will be repaired.

Sidewalks are determined by constituent reports, and are generally managed on a time basis. So, if you report a sidewalk, it goes on a list behind all the other sidewalks that have been reported to date. (So please, if you see something, report it!) For 2027, these are the following sidewalks that will be repaired/replaced:

FY27 Sidewalk Proactive:

Nichols Drive from Manslick Road to the dead end

Manslick Road from Nichols Drive to the dead End

FY27 Sidewalk Reactive:

1300 block of Central Avenue

2100 block of Dixdale Avenue

For road paving, Louisville Metro Public works has an existing inventory of all Metro-owned roads and their ratings. Roads are rated on a scale of 1-100, and roads that rate lower (under 60 or 70, usually) are prioritized. For District 3, the following roads were selected for re-paving based on the ratings of District 3 roads, their continuity, and the city budget's allocation of funding for paving:

FY27 Road Paving:

London Drive

Stafford Avenue

Cherry Way

Clarice Way

Janice Way

Linda Way

Louanne Way

Arcade Avenue

Additionally, Councilwoman Parrish-Wright allocated approximately $15,000 to have the intersection at Miller's Lane and Old Miller's Lane repaved until the entire road is set for replacement in fiscal year 2029.

District 3 includes three Metro-owned parks (GG Moore, William Harrison, and Watterson Lake) and one community center (South Louisville Community Center).

FY27 Parks Projects:

GG Moore Park Improvements (regulatory compliance and critical infrastructure; any park with a spray-ground needs to have a bathroom, updated shelter.)

South Louisville Community Center-Operational improvements

Watterson Lake Park fence installation

These are projects that will make our community safer, more beautiful, and capable of serving more of our residents.

(She also spent a TON of her money with these small businesses...)

Complete Streets Coalition: Interested in Serving? District 3 NEEDS representation!

complete streets

Are you interested in helping create safer, more accessible streets for everyone in Louisville Metro? If so, consider applying to join Louisville Metro’s Complete Streets Coalition.

The coalition was established as part of the 2022 amendments to Louisville Metro’s Complete Streets Ordinance. It includes 15 community members, along with representatives from the Louisville Metro Department of Transportation (DOT), the Transit Authority of River City (TARC), and the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA).

Members play an important role in reviewing publicly funded transportation projects to make sure they consider the needs of people of all ages and abilities, across all modes of travel. The Coalition also helps projects meet or exceed Louisville’s adopted design standards, supporting a more connected and inclusive transportation network.

There are currently several open positions, residents from across Louisville Metro are encouraged to apply.

To learn more or express interest, contact Jeremy Chesler - Complete Streets Program Manager at jeremy.chesler@louisvilleky.gov or click  Complete Streets Coalition Application.

Mosquito Safety Tips!

Don't get bit: Protect yourself and your community from mosquitoes

This week the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness announced that mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus were found in monitoring traps in the Wyandotte/Oakdale neighborhoods near Churchill Downs.  To help protect the community and reduce mosquitoes, mosquito fogging was scheduled for those neighborhoods.

“This is the time of year when we often start to see mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in many neighborhoods,” said Louisville’s Chief Health Strategist Connie Mendel. “We want everyone to have the information they need to stay safe. Simple steps can help lower the risk of being infected with West Nile virus.”

How to protect yourself from mosquito bites

  • Use insect repellent when you are outdoors. Products with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus work well when used as directed.
  • When you can, wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks. You can also use repellents on clothing for added protection.
  • Try to take extra care at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

How to reduce mosquitoes around your home

  • Empty standing water regularly from items like buckets, flowerpots, gutters, and birdbaths.
  • Change water in pet dishes often.
  • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair to keep mosquitoes outside.

There have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Jefferson County this year. Most people who are infected with West Nile virus do not feel sick. Some people may have mild symptoms, such as fever or body aches. Serious illness is rare, affecting less than one percent of people. Older adults and people with certain health conditions may be at higher risk for more serious illness.
