fischer

On Monday, December 1st, 2025 Councilman Ken Herndon and former Mayor Greg Fischer rededicated the corner of East Witherspoon and North Floyd Streets as “Mary Lee and George Fischer Way”.

Metro Council previously recognized Mr. Fischer and his many accomplishments in 2022. This rededication extends that honor to include his wife, Mary Lee Fischer, celebrating their shared legacy of service to the community.

In October, our office partnered with Louisville Parks and Recreation to host a joint meeting, Voices & Visions. Community members came together to share inspiring ideas for enhancing California Park—including suggestions such as adding outdoor restrooms and a gazebo to improve both usability and charm.

Councilman Herndon encourages neighborhood youth and residents to continue sharing their voices and visions for how California Park can better serve future generations.

OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITYDATA CENTER

Recently, LG&E received approval from the Public Service Commission (PSC) to construct two new gas-operated power plants to accommodate projected data center growth in and around Louisville.

In anticipation of that data center growth, Metro Council has tasked the Office of Planning (OP) with drafting zoning regulations specifically for data centers. OP held various public meetings in late October/early November and currently have a survey open for public comment.

The OS has been working closely with OP on drafting these regulations to ensure responsible data center development within Louisville Metro.

TIPS FOR SHELTER

If you receive a call to shelter in place while at home, act quickly:

  • Bring all household members and pets indoors.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors.
  • Turn off heating, air conditioning systems and fans.
  • Once officials say the shelter in place has been lifted and it’s safe to come out, consider changing the air filter for your heating and air conditioning unit, especially if you were unable to immediately shut down your system. Air filters are made to catch air pollutants and allergens. The effectiveness of air filters lessons over time. Replacing an air filter regularly (according to the manufacturers recommendations) helps promote optimal protection.

If you’re driving when you hear instructions to shelter in place, switch your car’s heat/air conditioning to recirculate internal air, if you have such a setting, or turn the air condition or heat off. Go to the closest safe space, whether it be your home, workplace, or a public or retail building.

If you’d like to learn more about sheltering in place, including creating an emergency stockpile kit to be prepared for sheltering in place for an extended period, visit this website.

SCAM ALERT

Louisville, KY – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is again alerting the public to an active scam currently circulating in our community during tax season.

Last week, the Sheriff’s Office warned of scam phone calls where individuals falsely identified themselves as Sheriff’s Deputies, claiming citizens had missed court dates and demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest. Scammers have now shifted tactics and are sending text messages instructing recipients to click a link and pay their “property tax bill.”

This is a scam.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will never call, text message, or message through social media to request or collect payment of any kind.

If you receive one of these text messages:

  • Do not click any link
  • Do not respond with personal or financial information
  • Delete the message immediately

We strongly encourage the public to share this information with family, friends, and co-workers to help prevent additional victims, especially those who may be more vulnerable to fraudulent schemes.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as needed.

For verification or questions, citizens may contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office directly at (502) 574-5471 or visit their official website www.jcsoky.org

Protect Vacant Properties this Winter

PROTECT VACANT PROPERTIES

As the colder months approach, vacant properties in our neighborhoods face a higher risk of crime, fires, break-ins, and other safety hazards. Unsecured buildings can threaten the safety of our entire community. The Department of Codes and Regulations urges residents and property owners to act now so we can protect our community together.

Property owners are required to keep vacant properties clean and secure to prevent emergencies and stay compliant with city codes. Taking proactive steps now helps avoid costly incidents and keeps everyone safer as temperatures drop.

If you have concerns regarding a vacant or abandoned property, or require guidance in securing your own, please contact our office at (502) 574-2508. Your help plays a vital role in maintaining safe and healthy neighborhoods throughout the winter season.

Let's join forces to freeze out fire risk and protect our community - your action matters!

Department of Public Health and Wellness

PUBLIC HEALTH WELLNESSflu

A mutated strain of Influenza A H3N2 is spreading in the United States and other countries, leading to warnings that this could be a severe flu season. This mutated strain emerged over the summer in the Southern hemisphere and is causing outbreaks of flu in multiple counties in the Northern hemisphere.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness flu data dashboard shows that cases of flu are increasing in Jefferson County.

If you have symptoms of flu, consider getting tested. Fee rapid flu tests are available at all Louisville Metro Parks Community Centers while supplies last. You can also purchase them at local pharmacies and grocery stores. Many viral illnesses just have to run their course but there are antiviral medications to treat flu. They are most effective when  started within the first two days of experiencing symptoms. Treatment is especially important for people at higher risk of complications from flu.

The flu vaccine still matters. It can:

  • Reduce how sick you get
  • Prevent hospitalizations
  • Protect against multiple strains

Bottom line: It's important year to get vaccinated against flu. To have the best protection, get your flu shot as soon as possible. Once you have been vaccinated, it takes 10-14 days for your immune system to develop antibodies that can protect you against a flu infection.

Traffic signal changes coming to Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Chestnut Street

CONVERSIONS

As part of Louisville Metro's Reimagine 9th Street project and the upcoming conversion of Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Chestnut Street from one-way to two-way traffic, several intersections will see traffic control changes beginning December 1.

At these locations, traffic signals will switch to red flashing mode and four-way stop signs will be installed. This setup will remain in place for at least 90 days while drivers adjust to the new multiway stop pattern.

The intersections on Muhammad Ali Boulevard that will be converted to all-way stops during this evaluation period include 13th Street, 15th Street, 16th Street, 18th Street, 26th Street, 28th Street, 30th Street, and Louis Coleman Jr. Drive.

On Chestnut Street, the intersections at 13th Street, 15th Street, 16th Street, 18th Street, 26th Street, 28th Street, and 30th Street will also be converted.

During the evaluation period, Louisville Metro’s Department of Transportation engineers will monitor traffic operations and safety. If it becomes clear that a traditional traffic signal is still the safest and most effective option, the stop signs will be removed and the signal will return to normal operation. If the evaluation confirms that the intersection functions safely as a multiway stop, the traffic signal will be permanently removed.

These changes support the broader goals of the Reimagine 9th Street project, which aims to build safer, more connected, and more people-focused streets throughout the corridor.

Louisville Department of Transportation

DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION

This year, Louisville Metro is enhancing snow operations to better prepare for winter weather and improve how we respond during snow and ice events. The goal is to keep roads clearer, safer, and improve response times.

Here’s what’s new for the 2025 - 2026 snow season:

Equipment upgrades include:

  • Eight new tandem-axle dump trucks and at least three pickup trucks equipped with plows, bringing the total snow-fighting fleet to more than 100 vehicles
  • Sixteen new brine tank replacements (five already delivered), maintaining a total of 24 tanks across the city for pretreating roads before storms
  • New curb guards on all plows to protect curbs, mailboxes, and pavement edges while extending blade life
  • Upgraded plow blades with tough carbide cutting edges — stronger and more durable than standard steel — meaning more time plowing and less time in the shop

Staffing improvements include:

  • The Roads and Maintenance Division is nearly fully staffed this year.
  • Louisville Parks and Recreation has added 18 additional staff members, bringing its snow team to more than 30 members covering 11 routes.
  • Dispatch coverage has also increased to improve coordination and communication during storms.

Smarter routes and updated snow map

We’re updating our snow routes and online snow map, that will be available on the Metro Snow Removal webpage (LouisvilleKY.gov/snow). Residents will be able to see plowing priorities and track operations more easily, helping everyone stay informed during winter weather.

Request For Proposals - Main Street Underpass Mural

Louisville Downtown Partnership (LDP) is seeking a mural artist or artist team to design and install a large-scale mural on the south wall of the Main Street underpass in Downtown Louisville. The wall spans roughly 260 feet wide, with heights of 23 feet on the east side and 12 feet on the west side. The creative theme, "Bridging Louisville," envisions weaving together the stories of Downtown’s past and present with those of adjacent neighborhoods—creating a visual bridge that celebrates our shared identity and history.

The underpass sits between Hancock and Jackson streets on E. Main Street. The wall is dimensional, with various sections of concrete blocks. The viewer will likely experience the mural up close as they walk on either side of the street.
