Yard waste plays an important role in creating nutrient-rich compost for our community — but only if it’s clean! Contamination in the yard waste stream makes composting harder and reduces the quality of the final product. Here’s how you can help:
Best practice reminders
- No plastic bags — ever! Use paper yard waste bags or reusable containers.
- Keep yard work materials out of the bin. Plant pots, plant tags, mulch and soil bags are the most common contaminants.
- Know your service schedule. Don’t mix trash with yard waste on collection days.
- Seasonal items welcome. Pumpkins and Christmas trees can go in yard waste during the holidays — just remove all decorations first!
- Don’t blow leaves into the street. It clogs storm drains, causes water treatment issues, and keeps leaves from becoming compost at Smith Creek.
Where does yard waste go?
Ever wonder what happens after your yard waste is picked up? It doesn’t just disappear — it goes on a journey to become something valuable! Yard waste is taken to Smith Creek Industrial Composting, where it’s ground, piled, and carefully managed to break down into rich compost. Smith Creek produces soil amendments, mulch, animal bedding, and even fuel pellets — used throughout Louisville Metro and available for purchase locally.
Plastic and other contaminants interfere with this process. Please do your part to keep yard waste clean so it can return to the Earth in a useful way. It’s a full-circle story — and you’re a key part of it!
Why contamination matters
When trash like plastic bags, plant pots, rocks, or even outdoor toys end up in yard waste bins, it causes big problems:
- More sorting and higher costs
- Lower-quality compost
- Risk of plastic bits in soil products
Only yard waste belongs in your bin: grass, leaves, sticks, small branches, pinecones, and other plant material. If it comes from the Earth, it should go back to the Earth — not the landfill.

As the colder months approach, vacant properties in our neighborhoods face a higher risk of crime, fires, break-ins, and other safety hazards. Unsecured buildings can threaten the safety of our entire community. The Department of Codes and Regulations urges residents and property owners to act now so we can protect our community together.
Property owners are required to keep vacant properties clean and secure to prevent emergencies and stay compliant with city codes. Taking proactive steps now helps avoid costly incidents and keeps everyone safer as temperatures drop.
If you have concerns regarding a vacant or abandoned property, or require guidance in securing your own, please contact our office at (502) 574-2508. Your help plays a vital role in maintaining safe and healthy neighborhoods throughout the winter season.

About 50 residents attended a public meeting Tuesday at the Louisville Water Tower to learn about two upcoming projects aimed at improving safety and mobility along River Road and Zorn Avenue.
Attendees viewed displays, spoke with project team members, and shared feedback that will help shape final designs to reflect community priorities and support Louisville Metro’s commitment to creating safer, stronger, and more connected streets.
The River Road Rightsizing Project (East Witherspoon Street to Beargrass Creek Bridge, 1.5 miles) proposes adding turn lanes, on-street parking, and new bicycle facilities, along with curb extensions, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and improved lighting.
The Zorn Avenue Rightsizing Project (River Road to Riedling Drive and Madelle Avenue, 1.2 miles) includes new lane configurations, buffered bike lanes, and upgraded pedestrian facilities and crossings.
Rightsizing—also known as a road diet—adjusts lane configurations to calm traffic, reduce speeding, and make streets safer for everyone who drives, walks, or bikes. Both projects were identified in the Vision Zero Louisville Safety Report and are funded in part by the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant.
Residents who were unable to attend can still share input on these projects by completing the surveys linked below.

Join the Mayor, Louisville Zoo and Kroger in supporting Dare to Care
The Louisville Zoo is thrilled to welcome guests back for Wild Winter Days, presented by Kroger, running now through February 28, 2026. And Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg is proud to announce that this seasonal promotion offers discounted Zoo admission while supporting a vital cause: a food drive benefitting Dare to Care.
“No family, child, or senior should ever have to go hungry, and our local food pantries are needed now more than ever before,” said Mayor Greenberg. “Our community needs us, and I hope that people will take advantage of this chance to help feed our neighbors who need us while supporting our fantastic Louisville Zoo.”
Guests who bring at least one non-perishable food item per person can purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo ticket windows for just $11 per adult and $8 per child or senior. In addition, 25 cents of every admission ticket will also support the Zoo’s conservation efforts in Kentuckiana and around the world.
Over the past 17 years of this partnership, generous Zoo guests have donated more than 30,000 pounds of food. That is roughly the weight of nearly five male rhinoceroses!
Dare to Care Food Bank’s most needed items include canned meats like tuna and chicken, as well as canned fruit and vegetables, beans, peanut butter, soup, rice, cereal, fruit juice and pasta. Please note that no glass containers are accepted. For a full list of needed and excluded items, visit daretocare.org.
The discount is available only at the Zoo’s admission windows and cannot be applied to online purchases, special fee-based programs, prepaid groups, field trips or other discounts. No refunds will be provided for tickets purchased online or in advance. While multiple canned good items per person are appreciated, only one discount applies per ticket.
Zoo Hours
The Zoo is open daily year-round. Now through March 20, 2026, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 11, 2025) – Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Zoo are excited to welcome Chrys, a male maned wolf, to the Zoo family. Chrys joins us from Wichita, Kansas, and will celebrate his 8th birthday on November 27.
“We are excited to welcome Chrys to his new home at the Louisville Zoo,” said Mayor Greenberg. “The return of maned wolves to the zoo‘s habitat is a wonderful addition, and we invite everyone to come see him and learn more about these unique animals.”
In the wild, maned wolves are generally solitary creatures, and Chrys is currently exploring the maned wolf habitat on his own. However, the Zoo has received a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and plans to introduce a female maned wolf to join Chrys soon.
Chrys, a curious yet cautious maned wolf, is known for his intelligence. Zookeepers observe that he enjoys his puzzle feeder enrichment, and, like most canids, he loves playing with a ball.
About Maned Wolf
The maned wolf is native to South America and can be found throughout Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Uruguay. Though generally solitary, they form semi-monogamous pairs during the breeding season. Maned wolves are omnivores with half of their diet consisting of fruit, supplemented by small mammals, birds and reptiles, insects, nuts, eggs and grass. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the maned wolf as near threatened.

Work is expected to begin next week on a transportation improvement project along Hubbards Lane aimed at enhancing safety, mobility, and traffic flow for road users.
The project includes extending the right-turn lane from northbound Hubbards Lane to eastbound Brownsboro Road (US 42), as well as new sidewalk installation beginning at Hubbards Lane and Coach Gate Wynde and extending to Brownsboro Road and Coach Gate Wynde, approximately 2,700 linear feet in total.
Once complete, the project will increase intersection capacity at Hubbards Lane and Brownsboro Road by providing additional right-turn lane storage. The new sidewalk will close existing gaps to create a continuous connection with nearby sidewalks and improve accessibility for pedestrians. The work will also include ADA upgrades at nearby crosswalks.
“This project will not only create safer walking options for nearby neighborhoods but will also enhance the walking experience itself,” said Steve Kurowsky, engineering supervisor at Louisville Metro’s Department of Transportation. "Residents will be able to enjoy a scenic route along Muddy Fork Creek — a chance to connect with nature without getting their shoes muddy.”
During construction, northbound Hubbards Lane will experience periodic right lane closures. These will occur only during off-peak hours, but motorists may experience modest delays while work is underway. The project is expected to reach substantial completion by March 30, 2026, though the timeline may be adjusted due to weather conditions.
Funding for this $700,000 project is provided by Louisville Metro Council District 7, under the leadership of Councilwoman Paula McCraney.
“I’m pleased to see this long-awaited improvement project begin on Hubbards Lane – one of the busiest corridors in District 7," said Councilwoman McCraney. "This project has been one of my top priorities and marks an important step forward in enhancing safety and mobility for District 7 residents and all who travel along Hubbards Lane. This investment represents my continued commitment to infrastructure projects that build a safer, more connected community.”
“The residents of Windy Hills are very excited about these projects and sincerely thank Dr. Paula McCraney, our District 7 Metro Councilwoman, for bringing it to fruition,” said City of Windy Hills Mayor John Roberts. “We have longed hoped for the extension of the North Hubbards right-turn lane at Brownsboro Road to decrease the congestion that occurs there. And the completion of the sidewalk loop around Windy Hills is a dream come true. We also thank our residents in Coach Gate for allowing us to walk their streets for the many years it has taken to get to this point. We look forward to seeing everyone out walking the loop come spring!”
When complete, the improvements will create a safer, more efficient corridor for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Progress continues on the on-street multi-use path on Pee Wee Reese Drive/Seneca Park Road! Though the cold snap slowed us down last week, our contractors have been working this week to install new detectable warnings on the ramps at all intersections, and pavement markings indicating the walking/biking path are being installed while the weather is warm. Our next steps include delineating the multi-use path with rumble stripping and vertical delineator posts to help create a clear, separated, and safe path for all road users.

The outside of The Dot Experience’s second and third floors, the heart of its main galleries, are taking on a striking new look with red and copper-toned panels arranged in a dynamic checkerboard pattern. Inspired by the textures of wood, stone, brick, and metal, the design gives the facade a lively, textured feel.
The first and ground floors are being finished in dark gray, concrete-style siding, creating a modern contrast and a sleek, urban edge. The result creates an exterior that’s as inviting as it is visually striking, making an impression long before visitors step inside.
The Dot Experience opens October 2026.

Louisville Water’s Residual Line Project
Beginning in December, Louisville Water will start construction of a new underground residual pipeline on our property across from the Crescent Hill Reservoir. The residual line is necessary to carry the treatment residual from the Crescent Hill Water Treatment Plant. Our filtration process produces residuals that must be removed. This work is expected to take approximately 12 months. Below is a map of the impacted area. Customer’s water service will not be impacted by this work.
