D3 Updates!

shively library flyer

The District 3 team has been out and about dropping off flyers for our exciting fall events! We can't wait to see everyone at the townhall with the Commonwealth's Attorney on October 21st, the District 3 BOB on November 1st, and our 2nd Annual Good Neighbor Awards on November 29th. We have a packed fall schedule and more details are below!

We are happy to report that the the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has granted the permit to reconstruct the fence along Manslick Road. The new Louisville Metro Department of Transportation (under Public Works) will coordinate with a fence contractor to remove the old broken fence and replace it with a new one.

Commitments Kept & Southwest Deserves More

Councilwoman Parrish-Wright allocated $50,000 to the Shively Splash Pad project. This will complement the portion that the City of Shively is paying for, as well as the $50,000 allocated by the mayor of Louisville during the budget process this past summer.

I want to acknowledge that Mayor Greenberg kept his word to me and Mayor Johnson by including $50,000 in this year’s budget for Louisville Metro’s portion of the splash pad. This investment allows us to partner equally with the City of Shively—the city I proudly call home—to make this project a reality for our families.

Let’s not forget: Shively residents contribute more than $9 million each year in taxes to Louisville Metro. We are a vital part of the merged government and the strength of the Southwest corridor.

That’s why I will continue to remind everyone that we deserve a seat at every table where decisions about the South End, West End, and Dixie Highway corridor are being made. Our communities matter, our voices matter, and our contributions to this city are undeniable.

Southwest Louisville is a great contributor to our metro government—and we deserve investment, recognition, and respect in every conversation about Louisville’s future.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the office at 502-574-1103. Please continue to invite the office to participate in your events, and letting us know what concerns we can help address.

camera maps

Councilwoman Parrish-Wright appropriated $50,000 in the budgeting process for MetroWatch cameras that can be accessed by LMPD. Many residents in District 3 have expressed interest in additional cameras in their neighborhoods. Councilwoman Parrish-Wright met with a representative from LMPD to discuss where MetroWatch cameras are currently, and where new ones can be placed. There are already a couple of cameras along 7th Street Road. The map above shows where both MetroWatch and Flock cameras are located in Jefferson County.

The difference is that MetroWatch cameras capture everything, while Flock cameras are a name-brand, and generally focus exclusively on recording vehicle license plate numbers. Additionally, Flock cameras share video recordings with LMPD while the videos from MetroWatch cameras belong to Louisville Metro.

To install one MetroWatch camera, the cost is approximately $7,000, depending on if LG&E allows Metro to use their utility poles (see discussion from the last newsletter). All this is to say that the $50,000 will buy about 7 or 8 MetroWatch cameras to be placed throughout the district. We are looking for input as to which locations residents think should have cameras. Where do you think would be an ideal location for a MetroWatch camera?

wrongful conviction day

At the last Metro Council meeting, Councilwoman Parrish-Wright sponsored the Wrongful Conviction Day resolution, which passed with bipartisan support, unanimously. The resolution recognizes October 2nd as Wrongful Conviction Day and urges the Kentucky State Legislature to create a fund that would provide automatic compensation to those who have been wrongfully convicted and imprisoned, and then exonerated.

This is the second year Councilwoman Parrish-Wright has sponsored this resolution and had it passed. Here she is pictured with other council members, and the seven exonerees from Louisville: Johnetta Carr, Edwin Chandler, Paul Hurt, William Gregory, Kerry Porter, Keith West, and Michael VonAllmen.

CJ muhammad ali article

Councilwoman Parrish-Wright was interviewed by the Courier Journal for this feature story about the 50th anniversary of Muhammad Ali's legendary "Thrilla in Manilla" fight.

Councilwoman Parrish-Wright discussed Ali's legacy of advocacy to current movements toward social justice and equity. You can read the article here!

catholic charities farmers market

Ben stopped by the Gray Street Farmer's Market hosted by Catholic Charities last week. There were great vendors and although it was raining, the event had a fantastic turnout. The District 3 office was invited to join, and we're so glad we were able to be there!

sidewalk 22nd st

Residents of the Hallmark neighborhood may have noticed new sidewalk construction at the intersection of 22nd Street and Algonquin Parkway. The District 3 team was able to stop by and see the progress of the sidewalk, which will assist pedestrians in this area, and bring the streets more closely in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

dr jackson class

If you follow Councilwoman Parrish-Wright on Facebook or Instagram, you may have seen that we hosted Dr. Trinidad Jackson's Public Health class at City Hall last week. We were thrilled to be able to speak with these young professionals and talk about the intersection of public health with local policymaking. We extend our thanks and gratitude to the excellent work done by Dr. Jackson.

daryl owens economic summit

The District 3 office was invited to attend the Darryl Owens Economic Summit at St. Stephen's this weekend. This amazing summit hosted by St. Stephen's and Simmons College of Kentucky highlighted the need for the city to invest in Black neighborhoods and bring economic opportunity and prosperity to our Black residents. We were thrilled to hear from some of Louisville's most brilliant minds including Dr. Ricky Jones and Reverend Kevin Cosby, and the legendary Mrs. Jackie Floyd.

youth mental health summit

District 3 contains the neighborhoods along Arcade Avenue, which is home to several members members of international communities. The More than a Smile Foundation serves our Somali newcomers, and the District 3 office was invited to join them for their Youth Mental Health Summit at the Park Hill Community Center. Here, Ben is with representatives from Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness, the Office for Violence Prevention, and Seven Counties Services.
