Jazz in Central Park This Sunday!

jazz2025

We are excited to be sponsoring Jazz in Central Park this weekend on Sunday, September 28. A huge thank you to the community members who stepped up to help out, especially to TS Elliott and Robin G for hosting, and to all the performers, technicians, vendors, volunteers, and suppliers. The weather looks great and the event should be as wonderful as usual.

We do still need volunteers for the event! If you are interested in helping with setup, event logistics, or cleanup, please find us in Central Park on Sunday between 12PM and 7PM. If you want to let us know you would like to help out, please call the office at 502-574-1106.

There are also a very limited number of vendor spots available. If you are interested, fill out this form. Space is limited but we will try to get back to you if a spot opens up for you. We have hit our max on food vendors, but other vendors (especially nonprofits) should consider applying!

District 6 News and Updates

Share your feedback on preferred roadway safety designs

Louisville Metro Public Works' Department of Transportation is seeking feedback to make Louis Coleman Jr. Drive, Wilson Avenue, and S. 22nd Street in the Park DuValle and Park Hill neighborhoods safer for everyone who walks, bikes, drives, and uses transit.

The public is invited to complete a brief survey to share ideas for street improvements and safety upgrades. The survey will close on September 30.

This is part of the federally funded Rightsizing Louisville for Safe Streets project, which includes safety improvements for 10 corridors in Louisville. The project is funded by a $21 million Safe Streets and Roads for All implementation grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Rightsizing, also called a road diet or roadway reconfiguration, calms traffic and reduces speeding and weaving between lanes.

Organizing Corner Vol XIV: A Week Without Driving

weekwithoutdriving

I’m excited to be participating in the Week Without Driving! Starting Monday, I’ll be getting around town on foot, on bike, by bus, paying for personal transit, or begging my friends to drive me around (and keeping notes on how much I’m asking for!)

The Week Without Driving started as a challenge in 2021 in Washington State for elected officials and other leaders to experience first-hand what it was like for people in the community who have no other option but to go without their own personal vehicle transportation. In the past four years it’s grown into a national program that’s given insight across the country into the challenges and opportunities in different locations face in terms of pedestrian and cyclist safety, walkability, and of course public transportation.

Last year alone, nearly 700 elected officials and administrators nation-wide participated in the Week Without Driving. By following this link, you can join myself and others to see for yourself what it’s like to go without driving a car around Louisville to get to work or school, buy groceries, see the doctor, and everything else you usually rely on your personal vehicle for. If you do, please document your experiences and share them, especially with your elected representatives!

This year’s program is very timely with this week’s release of the updated TARC network. I was relieved that the redesign will be based on the Enhanced Network proposal as opposed to the Limited Network. That said, it’s important to be honest that this redesign is a stop-gap which does not meet today’s transportation needs of the working class, address the environmental concerns that our cars-first-and-last transit systems contribute to, or solve the economic needs of our city.

This redesign also only postpones the conversation about TARC’s financial future for a few years. Improving and expanding our public transportation system with something like the Growth Plan will take investment; more would be required to make TARC a transit system that can comfortably, safely and reliably provide timely service that allows every Louisvillian to reach all of Louisville. That’s why I wholeheartedly support efforts to increase the occupational tax that funds TARC, which has not been updated since 1974 under the administration of Mayor Harvey Sloane.

Solidarity,

Councilman JP Lyninger
