Note from Josie

Dear neighbors,

Happy first day of school to all who celebrate! I sent my three kids, including a new middle schooler and a new kindergartener, off to their JCPS schools today.  We're thrilled to highlight the special schools in District 10 today and hope everyone has a wonderful year.

This week, Metro Council committees heard from new JCPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood and Public Works' Vision Zero team, which is working to keep families safe as they go to and from school and aims for zero roadway deaths by 2050.

Dr. Yearwood highlighted some ways the district and the city work together to support families, including when it comes to crossing guards. His team explained that JCPS cannot hire crossing guards because it cannot pay people working on municipal property; that's why we rely on LMPD's crossing guard program, which is experiencing a shortage.

I've spoken to folks across our district with concerns about school safety and continue to talk with JCPS and Public Works about lighted crosswalks and other solutions. So while I look forward to Dr. Yearwood's work to strengthen academic outcomes at JCPS, I know the city has a role in ensuring our families have safe commutes.

Some important resources you should know about:

Public Works and Vision Zero's "Louisville Safe Routes to School" interactive map, where residents can pinpoint their locations and explain how routes could be made safer

The Duck Duck Goose Louisville Bike Bus, a one-year-old network of cyclists riding together to ensure that kids get to school safely

If you have other resources we should know about, or have specific safety concerns, always let us know. Frustratingly, you can't reply to this newsletter but I'm at josie.raymond@louisvilleky.gov.
