Measles exposure reported at Kroger/Little Clinic on Dixie Highway

Earlier this week, Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) announced a confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro. The health department has learned that the infected individual visited the Little Clinic located inside Kroger, 4915 Dixie Highway, on Wednesday, July 9. As of July 16, there remains only one confirmed case of measles in Louisville Metro.
Out of an abundance of caution, LMPHW and Kroger continue to engage in contact tracing. Anyone who visited the Kroger's Little Clinic between 9:15 a.m. -12 p.m. on July 9 may have been exposed to measles.
“Immunization is the best way to protect yourself against measles. Individuals who have received two MMR vaccines have strong protection against measles infection,” said Dr. Kristina Bryant, LMPHW's associate medical director.
LMPHW recommends all potentially exposed individuals monitor themselves for symptoms of measles and take following steps based on their vaccination status:
-
Two documented, MMR vaccines or known measles immunity: No additional vaccines are needed.
-
One documented MMR vaccination: Talk to your healthcare provider about a second MMR vaccine.
-
No prior MMR vaccines: Contact the health department at (502) 574-8207 and stay at home through July 30.
“Exposed people do not need to be tested for measles infection unless they develop symptoms,” Dr. Bryant said. “Potentially exposed individuals who think they have been vaccinated but do not have immunization records can talk to their providers about a blood test to check for immunity to measles.”
Know the symptoms of measles
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads through the air. Symptoms usually begin 8 to 12 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. The characteristic measles rash typically appears three to five days after symptoms begin, often starting on the face and then spreading down to the rest of the body. If you develop any of these symptoms, please stay at home and contact your healthcare provider for further instructions.
Anyone who has symptoms of measles should notify healthcare provider before arrival so that precautions can be taken to prevent the spread of infection.
Protect yourself
Two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective against measles, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first dose of measles vaccine is routinely administered in combination with mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) to children at age 12 months through 15 months, and a second dose at age 4 through 6.
Children 6 through 11 months of age that are traveling internationally are recommended to receive a dose of MMR ideally at least two weeks prior to travel. This dose does not count toward the recommended vaccine series and should be repeated to ensure child receives two total doses on or after the first birthday.
Older children and adults should be up to date on recommended MMR vaccinations. Booster doses of MMR vaccine are not needed for people who have received MMR vaccines.
To get the MMR vaccine, contact your primary care provider. LMPHW also provides vaccines for children and adults at its Immunization Clinic. To schedule an appointment, call 502-574-5380.
