To help our hardworking waste collection crews stay safe and cool during the hottest months of the year, we’re adjusting our summer schedule. Starting Monday, July 7 until Labor Day week, crews will arrive to work one hour earlier than usual to begin truck inspections and prepare for their routes.
What this means for you: To ensure your garbage, recycling, and yard waste are collected without delay, please have all items set out by 5 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
This temporary schedule change helps our crews avoid the peak heat of the day while continuing to provide reliable service to our community. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we prioritize the health and safety of our team.
Stay cool, and thank you for helping us keep our city clean!

Our next Pop-Up Drop-Off event will be Saturday, July 19 at the Fern Creek Elementary and High School parking lots. Please enter at 8815 Ferndale Rd. Vehicles will exit through the high school lot.
Important reminders:
-
Do not arrive early! All Pop-Up Drop-Off events start at 10 a.m. A line of vehicles causes traffic backups and prevents our equipment from entering.
-
Try giving away usable items first! We see a LOT of decent items being trashed or recycled at our events. Some residents even offer these items to workers – staff is not allowed to keep items. Please try to donate or give away BEFORE coming to our waste and recycling event.
-
Loads of construction materials, lumber, and loose debris are NOT allowed! Take these loads to the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave. instead. Pop-Up Drop-Off events are very popular – please follow the rules so we can keep the line moving.
-
Separate your loads into the various categories. More can be recycled and the line moves faster when you are ready to offload your items at each station.

From grocery stores and restaurants to daycare centers, our 13 active food inspectors at the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) are tirelessly working behind the scenes to make sure what we eat is clean, safe and up to code.
Here’s a glimpse of how our inspectors evaluate grocery stores.
How many grocery stores do we inspect each year and how often?
Currently, our inspectors have 4,605 active food permits in our system, which includes everything from grocery stores, daycare facilities, schools, hotels and mobile food trucks.
Out of those 4,605, there are 947 permits that are considered retail or food service with retail.
Food service within retail includes grocery stores where food is prepared, served, and packaged on-site, such as Kroger, Walmart, ValuMarket, and Meijer. These stores are inspected twice a year. Some grocery stores do not offer food service, such as Aldi and Target. They serve prepackaged items and are only inspected once a year.
When someone looks at the most recent inspection report for a grocery store and sees they got an A, but then hears inspectors are investigating the store for an issue like a rodent infestation, how is it possible they got an A?
The only part of the grocery store that gets an inspection with a letter grade is the deli/food service area. Our inspectors are most concerned with the area where food is being handled, chopped, cut, cooked and prepared. For most grocery stores, that’s the deli area where ready-to-eat meals are prepared, as well as pasta salads, chicken salads, and other types of salads; meats and cheeses are sliced and packaged for sale. This area is a top priority due to its elevated risk of food-borne illnesses spreading if sanitation and safety regulations are not followed.
The rest of the store, which the inspectors classify as retail, does not get a letter grade.
Do we conduct a regular inspection of the retail area of the grocery stores?
Yes, the retail area of a grocery store receives an inspection twice a year. When an inspector conducts a retail inspection, we check for adulterated products and dented cans. We check cooler temperatures. We look to see that food is properly stored, and we look at overall cleanliness.
How many food safety complaints do we investigate each year?
As of July 1, 2024, we have received 958 complaints. It’s important to know that our food safety inspectors conduct routine inspections of grocery stores twice a year. That’s only 2 days out of 365. We rely on the public to let us know if they see unsanitary conditions the other days of the year. We investigate every complaint we receive.
How many of those complaints are related to grocery stores?
172 of those complaints were related to a retail/prepackaged facility.
How do you contact food inspectors if you have a complaint?
Anyone can report a complaint to us via Metro311’s website, social media, mobile app or by calling 502-574-5000. They can also share it with us via the Department of Public Health and Wellness social media channels or by calling 502-574-6650. To learn more about grocery store inspections and complaint investigations, watch our recent media briefing. For more information about food safety, please visit our website.

Each year, MSD’s Urban Reforestation Program partners with local organizations, neighborhood groups, and residents to plant 1,000 trees across Louisville and Jefferson County—strengthening our community’s green infrastructure one tree at a time. These trees actively manage stormwater while enhancing neighborhoods with beauty, shade, and cleaner air. Trees—and the green spaces they support—are powerful allies in protecting our waterways, reducing erosion, and creating a healthier, more resilient city for all.
The Urban Reforestation Program is now accepting applications for tree planting projects. Grants will pay for trees planted within the MSD Drainage Service area, which includes all of Jefferson County except for the cities of Shively, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews and Anchorage. Visit https://louisvillemsd.org/trees for more information and to download the application. The application deadline is Friday August 1, 2025 at 5pm ET.
Please contact trees@louisvillemsd.org or (502)540-6022 with any questions.

Julius still has the most legendary tongue in the adoption game flopping, flailing, flapping proudly for all to see. You thought Tongue Out Tuesday was a trend? Julius said “Hold my drool” and made it a FT job. He’s a show’r, not a grower, respectfully.
Julius is a certified handsome boy. That slick, blue coat? It shimmers like a midnight ocean (if the ocean also slobbers a little).
He’s been a fan favorite in the shelter, keeping the same energy in foster, he loves new dogs and keeps foster siblings on rotation but is waiting for his big GOTCHA day!
But here’s the BIG news...Julius is ready for his home!
Come meet this tongue icon in person at the Mall St. Matthews FREE Pop-Up Adoption Event:
Thursday, July 10 | 10AM–4PM 5000 Shelbyville Rd (The flyer has the wrong address)
Sponsored adoption fee thanks to our partners BISSELL Pet Foundation , he could be slobbering on YOUR couch for free.
So what are you waiting for? Julius is the dog other dogs envy...the man(dog), the myth(he's real), the moist(Sorry, Sam).
Come adopt the legend this THURSDAY July 10th or if you can't wait, email MASFoster@louisvilleky.gov

The prototyping team for The Dot Experience
Walk down Frankfort Ave., and you may see individuals walking alongside dog guides — highly trained companions dedicated to helping their handlers navigate obstacles and stay safe. Unlike typical pets, dog guides wear specialized harnesses instead of standard leashes, signaling their professional role. Opening in 2026, The Dot Experience will delve into the rich, storied history of dog guides and the iconic harnesses that symbolize their partnership with humans.
Spectrum News 1 recently highlighted how dog guides play a critical role in supporting the independence and safety of individuals who are blind or low vision. American Printing House for the Blind’s Danielle Burton, who is Deafblind, has relied on guide dogs for over a decade. Violet, her current dog guide, has served her faithfully for the past four years. In the news story, Burton explained that, contrary to common belief, the handler, not the dog, is responsible for knowing the route, while the dog assists with avoiding hazards and following safe paths.
Burton is a Cast Member for The Dot Experience and will share her lived experiences as an individual who is Deafblind in the attraction when it opens next year.
