Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July

The Mayor's Office of Sustainability is launching Plastic Free July next week! Plastic Free July is a global educational campaign aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste and promoting sustainable alternatives.

In July 2024, Mayor Greenberg proclaimed July as Plastic Free Month in Louisville to kick off the campaign as well as in response to a Metro Council Resolution directing the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability to spread awareness on plastic pollution. The announcement received good positive press. Over the month, our office highlighted local restaurants and businesses who are swapping single-use plastics with compostable and reusable products as well as Metro team members (including Mayor!) through a series of reels on social media.

This year, we are featuring the same content as well as highlighting local coffee shops that offer discounted coffee to people who bring their own travel mugs. We are kicking off Plastic Free July 2025 at the Mayor’s Weekly Press Conference next week on Tuesday, July 1. We will continue the social media campaign throughout the month as well as host a documentary screening of We're All Plastic People Now at Trellis Brewing at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.

Recycling Drop-Off Site at Mary T. Meagher Closing June 27th

Recycling Drop-Off Site at Mary T. Meagher Closing June 27th

The recycling drop-off location at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center will permanently close on Friday, June 27, 2025, due to Louisville Water’s Crescent Hill Rehabilitation Project.

Don’t worry—alternative recycling options are available! Visit Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMap to find your nearest site.

Most self-service recycling drop-off locations have multiple 8-yard dumpsters that are emptied (daily) on site by a front-load truck. These dumpsters are designed to help prevent illegal dumping and contamination. Signage is clear and consistent showing what is accepted and what is not. If you use any of the recycling drop-off sites, please follow these guidelines:

  • Only recycle accepted items. These are listed and pictured on each dumpster. Recycle paper, flattened cardboard, metal cans, plastic containers, and glass bottles and jars.
  • Insert recyclables into the slot on the lid. Bring your recyclables in a container that you find easiest to empty into the slot. This might take trial and error to find what works best for you.
  • Never leave items on the ground. Recyclable or not, please do not leave items on the ground. If all dumpsters are full, come back at another time.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Solarize Louisville 2025

Louisville Metro Government’s Mayor’s Office of Sustainability (OS) has partnered with the Kentucky Solar Energy Society (KYSES) to launch the 2025 Solarize Louisville program! Solarize Louisville makes going solar easy by connecting participants with vetted and trustworthy solar installers, providing a step-by-step walk-through of the solar installation process, and helping participants access discounted rates on solar. Going solar will help you reduce your energy bills, potentially increase your property’s value, support local solar jobs, and help Louisville meet its goal of using 100% clean energy community-wide by 2040!

On April 2, OS announced that Daily Green Power and Pure Power Solar have been selected from a competitive pool of applicants as the designated partners for the 2025 Solarize Louisville campaign. Both companies are local small businesses and bring many years of experience and professionalism. By connecting Solarize Louisville participants with vetted installers, Metro is eliminating the hassle for residents to shop for an installer themselves and providing a wholesale discount of 15-18%.

In total, Solarize Louisville has put solar on over 220+ properties. Join this growing community today! The program is open to residents, small businesses, nonprofits, places of worship, and other small non-residential properties in Louisville/Jefferson County and surrounding counties. To learn more about the program and sign up, please visit solarizelouisville.com

We also invite you to register for our upcoming Solar 101 Workshop by clicking the link below. At this workshop, you can hear directly from the installers, learn more about the process, and ask questions!

The Dot Experience Update

The prototyping team for The Dot Experience recently met at Solid Light in downtown Louisville. The team met to provide feedback on a key multisensory exhibit that will be in The Dot Experience, Helen Keller’s water pump. Members got the chance to touch and explore the pump to provide critical feedback. They also got the chance to explore multiple cane options on different types of flooring.

The prototyping team is made up of individuals who are blind, deafblind, and have varying levels of mobility. The team is important to The Dot Experience as members have provided important feedback on topics such as lighting, sound, textures, colors, height of exhibits, and more.

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Kazoo

Adoptable Pet of the Week: Kazoo

“Kazoo spent a beautiful day with Volunteer Melissa!

" "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play"

I got to spend a couple of hours with Kazoo yesterday morning. When I picked him up for our outing, he peed right away and then easily jumped into the back of my SUV. He was an excellent passenger. I rolled the windows down a bit so he could catch the breeze. He chose to be extra safe and kept his head inside, but he did seem to enjoy the ride.

When we got to my house, I turned on the splash pad, thinking he'd like to play in the water. I was wrong. . He seemed afraid of the sprinklers, so I turned it off. I thought maybe he would splash in the water that had pooled on the pad, but wrong again. Time for a new activity. Let's try ball.

This boy loves ball! He plays fetch like a champ. I think if he could, he'd play fetch all day. As soon as I would get the ball back, he would get excited, and jumpily demand I throw it again. Even though he was leery of the water, he was a brave boy and retrieved the ball from the depths of the scary splash pad.

Next, we headed to Brown Park for a nice shady walk. He did great on the leash, and ignored the numerous geese we encountered. There weren't a lot of people there, but one lady stopped to talk to him and he sat politely.

We picked up some food from Wendy's on the way back to Animal House. He loved the burgers, nuggets, and fries that we shared. He takes food and treats gently from your hand.

Kazoo is a really good boy!"

Thank you Melissa for giving this 75lb boy a great day out!!

Now it's your turn to get him out for good- Come Adopt KAZOO!!!
