Understanding Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom and Resilience
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. More than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a powerful reminder of delayed justice and a celebration of African American freedom, resilience, and culture. Juneteenth has grown into a nationwide observance with festivals, education, music, and community events that honor the struggles and achievements of Black Americans.
