May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. National statistics show motorcyclists are about 28 times more likely than people in cars to die in a crash. In 2024, 17 people were killed and 58 were seriously injured in motorcycle crashes on Louisville's streets.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety offers the following tips for motorcyclists and drivers.

Tips for motorcyclists:

  • Wear a DOT-compliant helmet.
  • Use turn signals for every turn or lane change, and combine with hand signals.
  • Wear brightly colored protective gear and use reflective tape and stickers to increase visibility.
  • Position in the lane where most visible to other drivers.
  • Pay attention by avoiding any action that takes your eyes, your ears or your mind off the road and traffic.
  • Obey the speed limit. Driving at the posted limit allows you to see, identify and react to possible obstacles.
  • Ride sober. Alcohol and/or drugs can impair your judgment, coordination and reaction time.
  • Take a rider training course. Find information at ride.ky.gov.

Tips for drivers:

  • Put the phone down and pay attention. Driving while distracted increases risk for all road users.
  • Perform a regular visual check by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or exiting a lane of traffic, and at intersections.
  • Use a turn signal before changing lanes or merging with traffic to alert others of your intentions.
  • Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle. Motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed.
  • Allow at least a three-second following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Obey the speed limit. Driving at the posted limit allows you to see, identify and react to possible obstacles.
  • Drive sober. Alcohol and drugs affect judgment, balance and reaction time. Always make a plan for a safe ride home.
  • Buckle up. Wearing a seat belt gives you the best protection against injury and death.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, an observance founded in 1949 by Mental Health America. This month aims to emphasize the significance of mental well-being, raise public awareness, diminish stigma, and foster support for individuals impacted by mental health challenges.

Raising awareness about mental health is essential for diminishing stigma, promoting early intervention, and cultivating empathy and understanding. By making discussions about mental health more commonplace, it creates a more compassionate society where individuals feel motivated to seek assistance, ultimately enhancing overall mental wellbeing.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You can also visit our Community Mental Health Services webpage for a listing of mental health resources.

Are you looking for a wellness provider? Visit Mental Health Lou for a listing of local professionals.

Mayor Craig Greenberg Announces Dinopalooza Opens at the Louisville Zoo!

Mayor Craig Greenberg Announces Dinopalooza Opens at the Louisville Zoo!

Travel Back in Time 65 Million Years and Still Make it Home for Dinner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 13, 2025) – Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg is inviting guests to travel back in time 65 million years — and still make it home for dinner — when Dinopalooza stomps into the Louisville Zoo on Saturday, May 17. Nineteen animatronic giants from the prehistoric era will bring ferocious fun to families through Sept. 1, 2025.

“I know a lot of people of all ages from around the region are going to be very excited about this latest attraction at the Louisville Zoo,” said Mayor Greenberg. “From a chance to see life-size dinosaurs to digging for fossils, Dinopalooza has something every family can enjoy.”

Miniature dino experts at home will no doubt recognize—and eagerly school anyone around them on — the 65-foot-long Brachiosaurus, the 40-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex, and the 30-foot-long Parasaurolophus. Good luck pronouncing that last one … not to mention Dsungaripterus or Quetzalcoatlus!

Budding paleontologists will have time to master all of the dinosaur names as they explore the interactive dig pit to uncover dino fossils.

These Jurassic giants will be spread throughout the Zoo for maximum prehistoric impact.

Dinopalooza is included with Zoo admission and free for Zoo members.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Now through September 21, 2025, Zoo hours are 10 a.m. ─ 5 p.m. (stay until 6 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more info.

League of Women Voters: Medicaid Cuts Affect Us All!

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS LOUISVILLE TO PRESENT PROGRAM ON THE IMPACT OF
MEDICAID CUTS

Proposed cuts to Medicaid will profoundly affect Kentuckians. The League invites the public to learn
about these cuts at the May 19, Democracy in Action Program “Medicaid Cuts Affect us All. It’s
Time to Act!” at 5:30 at the League Headquarters, 115 S. Ewing Avenue.

Medicaid provides cradle-to-grave health care to Kentuckians, as well as community care for individuals
with disabilities. It not only provides physical and mental health, but also economic health to providers,
facilities and supporting businesses.

Currently, 1.5 million Kentuckians–one third of all Kentuckians are covered by Medicaid. The cuts could
result in the loss of coverage to 450,000 Kentuckians, at an economic loss of 3.8 billion dollars. What
will happen to the services that cover:
*Low- and moderate-income children and parents
       *Other low-income adults
*Aged, blind, and disabled – including those with serious mental illness and developmental
         disabilities
*Elderly and disabled who require long-term care

Learn about these cuts and their impact from these leaders:
*Priscilla Easterling, Director of Outreach & Enrollment, KY Voices for Health
*Dr. Bart Erwin, CEO, Family Health Centers
*Mary Haynes, CEO & President, Advocacy Action Network

Dr. Sheila Schuster, Executive Director, Advocacy Action Network, will give a call to action.

This program is free and open to the public.
Date: May 19, 2025
Time: Doors open at 5:30; the program begins at 6:00 and will conclude at 7:30.
Place: League Headquarters 115 S. Ewing Avenue

Bring your questions, your concerns, and your friends.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan; grassroots organization working to protect and expand
voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. It empowers voters and defends
democracy through advocacy and education at the local, state, and national levels.

LIHEAP Spring Subsidy

LIHEAP Spring Subsidy

Kentucky households may qualify for a one-time electric benefit through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Spring Subsidy Cooling Component. Applications will be accepted from April 15 to May 30, 2025, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring Subsidy is designed to help households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines offset their cooling costs. It provides a one-time electric benefit, which is paid directly to the household’s electricity vendor.

Jefferson County residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. This toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at the time of application:

  • Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
  • Proof of income from the preceding month for all household members.
  • Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord (if electric is included in your rent), or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program.
  • The account number and name on the account for your electric bill.

Spring Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice, a past due bill, or eviction notice. The Subsidy benefit can be applied as a credit on your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.

Save Birds by Choosing to Go Lights Out This Spring!

Save Birds by Choosing to Go Lights Out This Spring!

You might know that millions of birds migrate over Louisville every spring and fall. But did you also know that billions of migrating birds are hurt or killed each year in the U.S.—and it’s due to artificial light at night pulling them off course or causing them to fly into windows and buildings?

With your help, Lights Out Louisville—a Louisville Audubon Society conservation initiative—aims to change that.

The solution is simple, and anyone can be a part of it:

—This April and May, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., turn off non-essential lights—both indoors and outside—and close your blinds, shades, and curtains.

—By reducing artificial nighttime light during the two biggest migration months in our area, we give migrating birds a better chance of surviving their long journeys.

—With a few simple actions, you’ll help save birds—and save money on your electricity bill at the same time!

Visit www.lightsoutlouisville.org to learn how going Lights Out is good for birds as well as people, and how you can be a part of the solution.

If you decide to go Lights Out, you can help Louisville Audubon track the program’s impact across our city by filling out a short pledge form as a resident/homeowner, or on behalf of your business or a commercial facility you own/operate. You can find both pledge forms on the Lights Out Louisville homepage at the address above. Business and commercial supporters will be promoted on the Lights Out Louisville website and on social media.

The Louisville Audubon Society thanks you for making the choice to go Lights Out!
