Hiring and Training for Lifeguards

With summer right around the corner, Louisville Parks and Recreation are training lifeguards to staff the city pools – including two NEW pools in Algonquin and Camp Taylor parks.

Please feel free to share this information about upcoming training sessions.

Louisville Parks and Recreation's Aquatics program provides swimming classes year-round and Lifeguard Training courses from March through June at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center (201 Reservoir Ave). Training classes are $200 or FREE if you commit to working for Louisville Parks and Recreation! 

Lifeguard training classes are offered to anyone 15 or older. Duties include enforcing rules, monitoring activity, cleanup, water tests and more. Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations on the first day of training: 

Prerequisite 1:

• Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

• Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed)

• Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs

• Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. 

Prerequisite 2:

• Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

• Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).

• Submerge to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10- pound object.

• Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.

• Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

MSD Updates!

MSD Sewer Overflow Advisory MSD-01/02: West Weather Overflows

Due to recent rains in the Louisville Metro area, sewer overflows may be occurring. Water containing sewage may be discharged from sewers in the MSD service area and may be on the ground, in drainage ditches, or in nearby streams. You are advised to avoid contact with the Ohio River, creeks, streams and drainage ditches, as they may contain sewage and stormwater runoff contaminants that could make you sick. If you, your family or your pets do come in contact with possibly contaminated water, wash it off with warm, soapy water, especially before handling food. While its still raining and for 48 hours after it stops raining, DO NOT FISH, WADE or SWIM in outdoor waters! This e-mail message is part of a public notification system within MSD's multi-year project to clean up area waterways - Waterway Improvements Now (ProjectWIN). Update: It has been 48 hours since significant rain has fallen in the Metro area. The impact from sewer overflows has been reduced.

Flood Saftey Week! 

This week, March 16-22, is Flood Safety Week. Floods are the most severe natural disaster in Louisville Metro according to the Louisville Metro Multi-Hazards Mitigation Plan. Flooding can occur from the Ohio River, interior streams, or a dam or levee failure. River floods generally develop slowly over several days or weeks, but flash flood from heavy rains or a dam or levee failure can occur in just a few minutes. Everyone should be aware of the flood hazards and be prepared.

Did you know homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage? Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Protect yourself and your home by calling your insurance agent to learn more about flood insurance or by going to www.floodsmart.gov.
