On Thursday, February 27th District 2 Councilwoman Dr. Barbara Shanklin and the Community Affair Committee celebrated the 23rd Annual Black History Month program with this year's theme of "Reaffirming our Diverse Culture". Every year each district submits an honoree and this year Councilman Herndon nominated, Sharron Brown.
Sharron Brown's Bio:
"The title of the 1946 movie produced and directed by Frank Capra, It's a Wonderful Life, perfectly reflects how she feels about her life journey so far. She considers herself blessed and fortunate to have experienced a diverse range of exciting employment opportunities alongside people from all walks of life.
After college, she began her career as a teacher before becoming the first female Sales Representative for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company. During a time when tobacco was a dominant industry in Kentucky, she broke barriers as the first female Tobacco Sales Representative in the state, paving the way for other women in the field.
Later, much of her young adult life was devoted to nonprofit work, where her heart led her despite the higher salaries available in the corporate world. She held supervisory and administrative roles at youth agencies in Cincinnati, helping Black teens obtain their GEDs, enroll in college, or secure entry-level positions with opportunities for advancement. These experiences were deeply meaningful and rewarding for her. She continued assisting young people reach their goals as an Assistant Director of Financial Aid at the University of Cincinnati before becoming the Financial Aid Director at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri.
One of her most fulfilling professional roles was serving as the Jefferson County Recruiting Supervisor during the 1990 Census. Her team performed so well that she was reassigned early to assist other offices in the eastern United States in meeting their recruitment goals. She returned, during retirement, to the U.S. Census in 2020 as a Recruiter and, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, found the experience equally rewarding.
Between these roles, she managed a woman's spa and later a co-ed fitness center, excelled in sales by genuinely believing in the products she sold, and worked as a Job Specialist at the Louisville Urban League under Arthur Walters.
Her passion for helping others led her to a supervisory position at Park DuValle’s Parent Child Center. After her retirement, she worked at Our Lady of Peace, where she humorously prayed, she wouldn’t become a patient herself.
Her long-term career position began in 1993 with Louisville Metro Government when it was still the Louisville Board of Aldermen. She continued working there after the merger, serving three locally elected officials as a Legislative Assistant.
She is a charter member of Zeta Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, at Eastern Kentucky University. She has been a proud member of the sorority for more than 50 years and is a shining example of living the organization’s mission of “service to mankind.” She currently is a member of Pi Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated.
Volunteerism has been the cornerstone of her life. She has been actively involved in numerous organizations as a volunteer, guided by her personal mantra: “Do at least one act of kindness every day that you can.” For her, this commitment requires not an organization, but a heart dedicated to service.
In October 2024, she was honored with the U.S. Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteerism by President Joseph Biden, Jr. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have dedicated over 4,000 hours of volunteer service during their lifetime-a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference."
