Metro digs out from snow and ice

We want to extend our appreciation for all the members of the Metro Snow Team for their dedication to serving our city. They worked around the clock from Sunday to Sunday to keep Metro’s 110 snow routes clear and in safe driving condition during the worst snowfall event the city had seen since 1998.

With slightly warmer temperatures today and forecast for tomorrow, we are hopeful for a thaw and clearer streets.

Some snow event numbers:

  • 12 inches total snowfall during prolonged event – nine inches in a seven-hour time span on Sunday, Jan. 5 (most snow amount in 25 years, 11.6 inches in 1998) and three inches Friday, Jan. 10.
  • 38,000 tons of salt on hand to start the winter season
  • 110 Metro snow routes (2,700 miles) – does not include what was done to accommodate JCPS, UofL, Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, TARC3 location or the Public Libraries
  • 160 pieces of equipment (snowplows, loaders, utility trucks, skid steers, augers, spreaders)
