Here is some additional information that may be helpful regarding how and what Louisville Metro Public Works is doing to remediate the large snow and ice events that fortunately Louisville has not encountered for over two decades.
The snow team consists of nearly 300-member Louisville Metro employees led by Public Works and also includes employees of Metro Parks, Codes & Regulations, and Fleet Services. There are over 8200 roads in Metro Louisville. The Snow Team uses 160 pieces of equipment to clear 2734 two lane miles. There are110 snow routes (a snow route includes multiple roads to get people from point A to point B.)
Roads included in our routes:
- Arterials get top priority: they are the major commuting paths through the city
- Collector roads are second on the list: they run between and feed traffic onto arterial roads
- Connections to major local employers, hospitals and emergency routes.
Most Neighborhood streets are not included in the snow routes. Interstate highways and associated ramps are cleared by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. snowky.ky.gov.
Here is the link to see if your street or nearby street is on the snow map and the current status of treatment. https://apps.lojic.org/metrosnowroutes
In regard to private property, Metro can not provide snow treatment however a District 18 resident had a good suggestion. It was neighborhoods establishing their own "Snow Patrol", a neighborhood help group to help senior citizens to get out of their driveways. Your HOA or Neighborhood Association could address this.
Realistically not every single road in the city can be plowed and treated. Residents that live in suburban cities have been able to do a little bit more since they have an additional tax base. After this significant event, Louisville Metro Council will be meeting with Metro Public Works to see what roads need to be added or removed from the snow routes.
I know it's frustrating and we are all suffering the elements but hang in there and thank goodness we have had very little power outages in this frigid weather.
Please let my office know if you have more questions or need to report issues. After the snow and ice there will be road damage so let us know if you see issues that need to be addressed.
Regards,
Councilwoman Marilyn Parker
