Hello from Councilman JP Lyninger

JP Lyninger here, newly sworn-in Councilman for District 6! Since being elected I have been meeting with my new colleagues on the Metro Council, getting familiar with Metro Government, discussing how to serve all of our neighbors with various non-profits, and continuing to prepare for my new role. I will be serving the people of District 6 full-time, so I also spent some time winding down my private business. You can read more in my bio on the District website.

Besides looking for our newsletter in your inbox, we’ll also have new official social media accounts. Facebook is already set up, so please follow and share with your neighbors!

I’d also like you to join me in welcoming the new Legislative Assistant for District 6, Nick Conder! Nick previously worked for the Louisville Free Public Library and holds a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs from the University of Louisville.

We are dedicated to making sure that District 6 residents receive regular and consistent communication from our office. We are still getting things together but hope this newsletter will be a very useful resource for our district going forward.

Winter Storm in Louisville

The recent winter storm in Louisville has caused significant disruption. Please stay tuned to local media and official government sources for updates on travel conditions. You can track the progress of road treatment and plowing here.

Waste Collection Update: there was no garbage, recycling, or yard waste pickup on Monday or Tuesday. Collection for garbage only will resume on Wednesday-Friday for those regularly scheduled on those days. Recycling will be collected next week. The Recycle Coach calendar will be updated. Please keep an eye on the Public Works website for updated information.

Operation White Flag has been activated.

Louisville has two participating White Flag locations: Salvation Army, 911 S. Brook St. and Wayside Christian Mission, 432 E. Jefferson St.

Additionally two-day Warming Centers will be available during this period of extreme weather:

Sledding Options

As sledding is an enjoyable tradition for local families, Louisville Parks and Recreation wants to remind the public that it opens designated sledding hills in five parks, during park hours (6 a.m. - 11 p.m.), on days when snow accumulation reaches 2-3 inches.

DESIGNATED SLEDDING HILLS:

Cherokee Park (Baringer Hill, intersection of Alexander Road and Scenic Loop)
Joe Creason Park (Trevilian Way, across from Louisville Zoo).
George Rogers Clark Park (1024 Thruston Avenue, behind playground, near McKinley Avenue)
McNeely Lake Park (6900 Cooper Chapel Road, near Korean War Memorial)
Charlie Vettiner Park (5550 Charlie Vettiner Park Road, near Easum Road entrance)

Metro Council Organizational Meeting

Due to inclement weather, the organizational meeting of the Louisville Metro Council has been postponed until Thursday, January 9 at 4PM. This meeting will be open to the public and feature the selection of a Council President and the ceremonial swearing-in of the newly elected members.

Meriwether-Fort Hill Neighborhood Association

Monthly Meetings held at The Bard's Town - 511 E Burnett Ave at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday

Old Louisville Neighborhood Council

OLNC meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm. Location: the Historic Old Louisville Visitors Center (1340 S 4th Street)

Paristown Pointe Neighborhood Association

Board of Directors elections are on January 14 at 6 PM at The Cafe on the third floor

Shelby Park Neighborhood Association

SPNA members meet most months on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Location: Shelby Park Community Center (600 E. Oak Street)

Taylor Berry Neighborhood Association

Meetings held on the 1st Tuesday of the month (except August) at 6 pm at the South Louisville Community Center (2911 Taylor Boulevard). No meeting in January due to snow.

Organizing Corner Vol I: District Advisory Council Coming Soon!

As many of you know, I’m an organizer. I plan to make organizing and building people power central to everything we do in our office, and that includes our district newsletter. At the end of each edition of the newsletter, we’ll have something new we’ll be sharing with everyone. That might be expanding on something mentioned in the newsletter and why it’s important to the people of District 6 and Louisville, or sharing resources on building your own organizing muscle, or it could just be discussing some of the political events of Louisville and beyond. Here in this first communication from our office, I want to talk about: communication!

Besides reviving the newsletter, I’m committed to our District having a LOT more communication, and that’s not going to be just one direction. We’re going to be working together to build a Louisville that’s for everyone, and that can’t happen top-down. I say it so often that it’s how I’m saved in my daughter’s phone, but it’s true: I’m just some guy. The ability to change our city into one that fits everyone’s needs comes only from our collective power. I can’t do it alone, and to do it together we need to be communicating. To help make that a reality, we’re going to be setting up a District 6 Advisory Council in the next few weeks. Our vision is a collection of boards our office will meet with in every corner of the district that also sends representatives to a central council. We’ll use these meetings as a way to have organizing conversations with residents throughout the district, but also so those residents can connect with one another and make our community stronger.

We’re dreaming big here—none of this happens if people don’t get involved! I know from personal experience that the people of our district, from Algonquin to Paristown Pointe, are hungry for change and excited about for the chance to get to work to make that change a reality.

The District 6 Advisory Council will be an excellent way to be directly involved with our office and in our city. If you’re interested in being part of this, be on the lookout for the application, which will be coming soon to our under-construction District website and new social media.
