Metro Government’s Boards and Commissions

There are approximately 60 boards and commissions with many areas of interest.  Please see the below list of boards and commissions with terms expiring on or before July 1, 2012.  I would like to encourage 9th District residents to check out the various boards and commissions and apply to serve on one of them online at www.louisvilleky.gov/serveonboard or forward this to someone you think might be a good public servant.  The Metro Council is looking to diversify the areas of which board members serve and the best way to do that is to encourage residents to sign up!

Schemes, Scams and Frauds YOU Should Know About

lmpd
LMPD wants you to be aware of some schemes, scams and frauds so you can avoid them.  One popular scheme used by con-artists on unsuspecting victims is called the “Pigeon Drop.”  A Pigeon Drop can take on many forms but the scam is geared toward one result – obtaining money from a victim.  An example of a Pigeon Drop is when a victim is approached by a suspect in a public area such as a parking lot.  The suspect claims to have found an envelope, a bag, or a wallet containing a large sum of money.  The suspect asks the victim if the money belongs to him/her.  When the victim says that it does not, the suspect engages the victim in a conversation about the found property.  The suspect might pretend to know an attorney or bank representative that can help them figure out what to do with the money.  The suspect will convince the victim that if no one claims the wallet in a certain amount of time, they will be allowed to split the money.  The suspect will persuade the victim to withdraw money from his/her bank account to put up as “collateral” or in “good faith”.

Criminals who are successful at this type of scam are sometimes well-dressed and articulate which makes them appear more trustworthy.  Suspects who participate in the Pigeon Drop scheme are often intelligent, persuasive, and aggressive.  These suspects hope to confuse and overwhelm victims to convince them that there is a sense of urgency to make quick decisions.

A newer version of this type of scam can find its way into your email.  You’ll receive a message saying you have won a lottery or will receive a long lost inheritance.  In order to receive the funds a deposit is required.  Many of these scammers operate outside of the United States so prosecution is not possible for local police departments.  If you receive an email such as this simply delete it and do not respond.
