Final Council Meeting 12/12, End of Year Note

Thursday, December 12th, 2024 at 6pm is the final Metro Council Meeting of 2024. While the agenda is not yet complete for this meeting, we know the final meeting of the year is a lengthy one. There will be several recognitions for departing council members, and legislation to wrap up the year. If you can join us, please do. If not, the meeting is always accessible online at this link.

2024 has been a whirlwind year, and our team has learned a ton about how to pass legislation and the ins and outs of how Metro Government functions. The Councilwoman will have more to say in one final newsletter for 2024, but for now, the District 3 team just wants to express sincere gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community. From residents (homeowners, renters, and those experiencing housing insecurity), to business owners, to executive directors, to union members, we are so thankful to everyone in our community. We've been privileged to build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships and look forward to continuing to do so in 2025.

DOJ Consent Decree with LMPD Update

consent decree press conference

Mayor Greenberg has refused to commit to signing the Department of Justice Consent Decree before Donald Trump is inaugurated. This is likely to stall the process until Trump takes office and his administration completely abandons consent decrees, meaning the consent decree with LMPD would be all but null and void. It is unconscionable that the mayor is more concerned with a timeline for ending the consent decree than fixing the numerous problems rampant within the Louisville Metro Police Department. The administration has insinuated that the consent decree would hinder LMPD's ability to reduce crime. Given the Department of Justice is the highest level of policing in the country, the insinuation that they'd somehow block or inhibit policing is, at best, dubious. Everyone, the mayor included, has agreed to a goal of constitutional policing, which is exactly why the consent decree is necessary. What valid reason does the mayor have to drag his feet on signing this document? Perhaps so LMPD can continue discriminating against those the mayor deems undesirable? Perhaps so the city doesn't have to fund a monitor and more money can be directed to luxury hotels?

In Louisville, we must hold many truths. LMPD earned this consent decree. The LMPD harmed the community and the community gets to decide how to heal. The mayor was elected to serve all of us, not just some. He must follow the will of the people. Please help convince him of that. We want LMPD to have the resources they need to police fairly while also being held accountable when they violate our civil and human rights.

Councilwoman Parrish-Wright was interviewed by the Courier Journal regarding the state of the LMPD Consent Decree. Read more here
