Call for Volunteers for 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

Call for Volunteers for 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

It's that time of year again to prepare for Louisville's third annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday, November 17. World Day of Remembrance is a global event held every third Sunday in November to honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by roadway crashes. The day also serves as a crucial opportunity to demonstrate the scale and impact of road-related deaths and injuries and advocate for change.

We need volunteers to help with planning the event, including securing the venue and speakers, as well as day-of support, including set-up and tear-down.

Kentucky Transportation Center Releases New Report on Effectiveness of Roadway Reconfigurations in Louisville

Kentucky Transportation Center Releases New Report on Effectiveness of Roadway Reconfigurations in Louisville

The Kentucky Transportation Center at the University of Kentucky released a new report on the effectiveness of roadway reconfigurations in Louisville. Roadway reconfiguration, also known as road diets or rightsizing, typically involves converting a four-lane undivided roadway to a three-lane road consisting of two through lanes and a two-way left-turn lane. The Federal Highway Administration considers roadway reconfigurations to be a proven safety countermeasure, meaning they are seen as an effective way to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. Research engineers with the Kentucky Transportation Center found that roadway reconfigurations in Louisville did not significantly impact operations while reducing fatal and serious injury crashes. These crash types are the focus of Vision Zero Louisville, the city's transportation safety initiative, which envisions zero roadway deaths by 2050.

Since 2009, Louisville Metro Public Works and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) have completed over 40 rightsizing projects throughout Louisville. Most of these projects were completed at minimal cost by simply reconfiguring the road at time of repaving.

In 2023, Louisville Metro Public Works was awarded a $21 million Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to implement roadway reconfigurations on 10 corridors in Louisville, including portions of Louis Coleman Jr. Drive, Oak Street, and River Road. The SS4A discretionary grant program was created to support projects that reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.
