Twelve
innovative “First Mobility Vehicles” – or MV1s – are now part of the TARC fleet
serving people with disabilities.
The MV1s,
which resemble a small SUV and began operating in Greater Louisville last
month, are the first designed, factory-built and assembled vehicles to meet
guidelines of the Americans With Disabilities Act. TARC’s MV1s were assembled
by Vehicle Production Group in Mishawaka, Ind.
“TARC3 is
among the first paratransit agencies in the country to use these new vehicles,”
said J. Barry Barker, executive director of TARC. “We’re excited about the
potential and we have heard positive comments so far from our TARC3 customers.”
Most TARC3
vehicles are minivans or small buses. With its lower floor, electric ramp
and roomy interior, the MV1 accommodates a wider variety of wheelchairs and
scooters than a minivan, said Priscilla Rao, director of paratransit and customer
service for TARC.
Another
improvement is better gas mileage resulting in fuel savings and environmental
benefits. New gas-powered paratransit buses typically travel eight miles per
gallon while the MV1 vehicles get 12.5 miles per gallon.
TARC’s MV1s,
which each cost about $44,000, were purchased with funding from the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2008.
TARC3
provides about 390,000 trips a year for people with disabilities who are unable
to use TARC’s fixed-route bus service. The system transports multiple
passengers in the same vehicle going to different destinations. For more
information on TARC3 Paratransit Service, visit www.ridetarc.org.
