On July 16, 2024, Mayor Craig Greenberg joined Metro Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern to announce final recommendations for the creation of a new Department of Transportation (DOT).
The DOT will be responsible for public way infrastructure, including planning, design, construction, maintenance and management. This new department will be dedicated to enhancing the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of our city's transportation network.
“We have seen other cities around the country successfully create and implement local Departments of Transportation and I am confident the Louisville DOT will make it easier for people and businesses to move around our city quickly, safely, and efficiently,” said Mayor Greenberg. “Improving transportation will also strengthen our economy and help us plan and implement Louisville’s future growth and development.”
“Evaluating yourself and the work needed to do your job better isn’t an easy thing,” said Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern. “We are very grateful to our consulting teams Cityfi, Sam Swartz Engineering and Gifted by Design for leading us through this process and to all those who took time to share information during interviews earlier this year.”
“I'm excited about the opportunities the new Department of Transportation can unlock, said Metro Council President Markus Winkler. “By aligning these key functions, I'm hopeful we will be able to efficiently manage our transportation spending, improve strategic planning, and provide a better experience for our residents.”
Beginning in early 2024, the consulting team lead by Cityfi, LLC invited stakeholders including Metro Council Members, APCD, KYTC, Kentuckiana Planning & Development Agency (KIPDA), PARC, Parks, Metro Department leaders and employees, suburban city leaders, and mobility advocates to join in interviews and focus groups to share ideas on their vision for transportation in Louisville Metro.

A small section of River Road will be closed this Saturday and Sunday to replace the railroad crossing near 2031 River Road between Edith Road and Frankfort Avenue.
Roads & Operations crews from East District were up early today clearing roads of tree debris after the overnight windstorm. Below, Scott Logsdon, Jordan Satterly, Scott Henry, Joshua Willoughby and Tyler Adamczyk removed a tree form Altawwod Court in Eastern Jefferson County.

Thank you, Mayor Greenberg, for officially proclaiming July as Plastic Free Month in Louisville!
Try "skipping the stuff" when you go out to eat or get takeout. Requesting only the items you will use reduces pollution, reduces costs, and sets a good example!
