BBB serving Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana has tips for safe shopping for consumers on Amazon:
-
Research the seller or retailer. Before you buy, check customer reviews of the product(s) you're interested in purchasing and do some research on the retailer. Be sure you can find contact information for the seller and make note of it. Look up the retailer on BBB.org to see if they are BBB Accredited and check out their profile to read customer reviews.
-
Check a website’s security settings. If the site is secure, its URL should start with HTTPS:// and include a lock icon on the purchase or shopping cart page.
-
Professional photos do not mean it’s a real offer. Photos can be stolen from other websites, so don’t believe what you see. If logos or other images on the website appear blurry, take that as a red flag.
-
Protect your personal information. Read a site’s privacy policy so you know what personal data is being requested and how it will be used. No privacy policy? Consider that a red flag.
-
Beware of deals that are too good to be true. Simply put, name-brand products advertised at unbelievably low prices often indicate a scam.
-
Shop with a credit card. If a transaction proves to be fraudulent, a credit card provides additional protection, and it’s easier to dispute charges.
BBB encourages anyone who has encountered an online shopping scam to report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker. For more information on this and other scams, visit bbb.org.
Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy is here to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs. Enrollment starts July 16 and runs until September 13, 2024, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Summer Subsidy Component provides households with incomes up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor.
Jefferson County residents wishing to apply may schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling (502) 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at time of application:
- Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
- Proof of income from the preceding month for all members of the household.
- Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord if electric is included in your rent, statement from utility company if you participate in a Pre-Pay Electric Program.
- The account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill.
The Summer Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice or past due bill. The benefit can be applied as a credit on your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.
For more descriptions about LIHEAP income eligibility and other instructions, visit https://louisvilleky.gov/LIHEAP. Residents may also call the automated LIHEAP information line at (502) 991-8391 or visit www.louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.

Kentucky’s Community Action Agencies operate LIHEAP in partnership with Community Action Kentucky and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services who receive the funding as a pass-through block grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Louisville Zoo is happy to announce the newest addition to its extended family and its award-winning Gorilla Forest habitat: 11-year-old western lowland gorilla, Patty.
Patty’s arrival creates a new gorilla troop which includes silverback Casey (42 years old), adult females Paki 35 years old) and Kweli (40 years old) and young female Kindi (8 years old). Patty and her family group will be in exhibit rotation with bachelor groups including Bengati, Jelani, Cecil and Kicho.
Patty was born at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo and comes to the Louisville Zoo with a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. In time, she will be paired with silverback gorilla, Casey.
Her zookeepers say that Patty is a socially savvy gorilla. Her acclimation to the new environment and integration into the established group is going smoothly.
Gorilla Conservation Status
Only found in the dense forests of central Africa, gorillas are critically endangered and could face extinction if stronger efforts are not mounted to protect them. The primary threats to their survival are illegal poaching, civil unrest, disease, and habitat destruction due to extractive industries such as mining.

Tips for attending a Pop-Up Drop-Off:
Pop-Up Drop-Off events are extremely popular, and our staff strives to make the drive-through experience as efficient as possible. Here are seven tips for attending a Pop-Up Drop-Off:
-
Do not arrive early! All Pop-Up Drop-Off events start at 10 a.m. A line of vehicles causes traffic backups and prevents our equipment from entering.
-
Only bring sensitive documents to be shredded! The line for shredding is usually the longest. We have seen catalogs, paperback books, etc. being shredded, which is unnecessary and takes up valuable time.
-
Make sure no items are mixed with your documents! We've seen hammers, scissors, and toys mixed in with documents. These contaminants can break the shredding truck's equipment!
-
Try giving away usable items first! We see a LOT of decent items being trashed or recycled at our events. Some residents even offer these items to workers - staff is not allowed to keep items. Please try to donate or give away BEFORE coming to our waste and recycling event.
-
Loads of construction materials, lumber, and loose debris are NOT allowed! Take these loads to the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave instead. Pop-Up Drop-Off events are very popular - please follow the rules so we can keep the line moving.
-
Separate your loads into the various categories! More can be recycled, and the line moves faster when you are ready to offload your items at each station.
-
Check-in staff will ask for your zip code and which types of items you brought. We track this information so we can keep improving our events. Most residents bring large items, electronics, and documents for shredding. Other categories include metal (or mostly metal) items, tires, yard waste, household recyclables, prescription medication, and shoes.
