Tips for attending a Pop-Up Drop-Off:

Pop-Up Drop-Off events are extremely popular, and their staff strives to make the drive-through experience as efficient as possible. Here are seven tips for attending a Pop-Up Drop-Off:

Do not arrive early! All Pop-Up Drop-Off events start at 10:00am. A line of vehicles causes traffic backups and prevents their equipment from entering.
Only bring sensitive documents to be shredded! The line for shredding is usually the longest. They have seen catalogs, paperback books, etc. being shredded, which is unnecessary and takes up valuable time.
Make sure no items are mixed with your documents! They've seen hammers, scissors, and toys mixed in with documents. These contaminants can break the shredding truck's equipment!
Try giving away usable items first! They see a LOT of decent items being trashed or recycled at their events. Some residents even offer these items to workers - staff is not allowed to keep items. Please try to donate or give away BEFORE coming to our waste and recycling event.
Loads of construction materials, lumber, and loose debris are NOT allowed! Take these loads to the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Ave instead. Pop-Up Drop-Off events are very popular - please follow the rules so they can keep the line moving.
Separate your loads into the various categories! More can be recycled, and the line moves faster when you are ready to offload your items at each station.
Check-in staff will ask for your zip code and which types of items you brought. They track this information so they can keep improving their events. Most residents bring large items, electronics, and documents for shredding. Other categories include metal (or mostly metal) items, tires, yard waste, household recyclables, prescription medication, and shoes.

Tree planting grants are now available!

In addition to providing shade and beautifying neighborhoods, trees are powerful tools to slow down and soak up stormwater. This helps reduce erosion and improve water quality in Louisville’s waterways. These are just some of the reasons why MSD works with local organizations, neighborhood associations, and residents to plant 1000 trees each year. They hope you will consider being one of their tree planting partners this upcoming planting season!

MSD’s Urban Reforestation Grant Program is open to residents, organizations, companies, and agencies to support tree planting projects in MSD’s Jefferson County Drainage Service area. This includes all of Jefferson County except for the cities of Shively, Jeffersontown, St. Matthews and Anchorage. Please see the program guidelines and application in the attachment. The deadline to apply is Thursday August 1st at 5pm ET.

ENROLLMENT FOR LIHEAP SUMMER SUBSIDY COOLING OPENS JULY 16

Jefferson County Residents Can Apply for Electric Assistance through Louisville Metro RCS

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy is here to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs. Enrollment started July 16 and runs until September 13, 2024, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Summer Subsidy Component provides households with incomes up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor.

Jefferson County residents wishing to apply may schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling (502) 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at time of application:

Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
Proof of income from the preceding month for all members of the household.
Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord if electric is included in your rent, statement from utility company if you participate in a Pre-Pay Electric Program.
The account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill.

The Summer Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice or past due bill. The benefit can be applied as a credit on your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS) serves as the administering agency of the Louisville Metro Community Action Agency.

Kentucky’s Community Action Agencies operate LIHEAP in partnership with Community Action Kentucky and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services who receive the funding as a pass-through block grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Louisville Bats Community Nights

The Louisville Bats will host two community nights, providing tickets, hot dogs, and soft drinks to non-profit groups and those who might not normally get to attend a game.

These two nights are Wednesday, August 21 and Wednesday, September 4. Organizations with 20+ guests should use this form, while individuals wanting to request tickets should use this one.

Forms will be monitored and will close once each district has reached their maximum allotment. Please register soon, so you don't miss out!

In April 2024, the Jefferson County Board of Education approved a new transportation plan for the 2024-25 school year aimed at improving punctuality for their students. JCPS is reminding families that using TARC to get to school is a great option for older students.

Every JCPS family must also complete the 2024-25 school year Student Transportation Verification Form as soon as possible to plan for the new school year.

Please note that Exceptional Child Education (ECE) students who have transportation as part of their Individual Education Program (IEP) and students who receive McKinney Vento Homeless Act services will get transportation services no matter what school they attend.

VOA’s annual Back to School campaign

Every year, VOA and their community partners promote this campaign to gather items crucial to these young children having a successful school year. Generous donations from individuals throughout the community can have a major impact:

$50 – Provides one child with a sturdy backpack, ink pens, pencils, and notebooks.

$75 – Provides one high school-age student with the required scientific calculator.

$100 – Provides three sets of uniforms for one child.

Donations can be made through VOA’s secure website or in the form of a gift card, which can be dropped off at Furniture Fair, located at 9132 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville, KY 40299.
