Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Last week, the Metro Council amended the Mayor’s proposed budget and passed the budget that will go into effect on July 1st. This was almost unanimous with one ‘no’ vote on the operating budget only (the capital budget passed unanimously). As is typical, the budget has things I agree with and things I don’t but on balance, it was a good budget and accomplished most of my top goals which focused on infrastructure and long-term fiscal stability. Some highlights include:
- In addition to the Mayor’s proposed operating cuts, we worked with him to make additional operating expenditure cuts to ensure we don’t have expenses outpacing income
- We raised his proposed paving budget from $22M to $30M
- We reduced overall debt slightly to ensure we see stability and reductions in future interest payments
- We made cuts in some projects and refocused those dollars on deferred maintenance and infrastructure
Council is now on a short break and we will be back in 2 weeks to continue to work of the city and to ensure the Administration properly executes the budget we have passed.
The Mayor has prioritized a new housing push called ‘middle housing’ which is targeted at home ownership and housing for new homeowners and those in the ‘middle class’. I am also on a Council created ad-hoc committee on housing looking at these issues and our current housing issues in the city. Although I support people of all income levels having the ability to buy a house, I have concerns with some of the ideas that are being sharing such as ‘by-right zoning’ which allows higher density housing in R-4 zoned areas or the elimination of single-family zoning. There is a website dedicated to this and there is a form to solicit feedback from residents.
