Annual Budget Passed

budget pic

After several weeks of attending every budget hearing and meeting, Councilwoman Parrish-Wright voted on the annual budget for Louisville Metro. (Meetings can be viewed from this link.)

While we managed some wins, like funding for the Soil and Water Conservation District, the Jefferson County Extension Office, and increased funding to Area Community Ministries, we are disappointed that the annual budget didn't meet several needs in our community, like addressing root causes of poverty and violence. We are also discouraged by the fact there was no political will on the part of the mayor's administration to fund public transit. The budget is a moral document and it is clear where metro government's priorities lie--in policing, surveillance, punishment, and new private (but publicly funded) organizations.

On the other hand, through this process, our office was able to allocate some district funding to sidewalk improvements, home repair programs, Shively Area Ministries, and improved lighting on our streets. Thank you to everyone who let us know their concerns for their neighborhoods! Additionally, we will continue to fund improvements in our district, but since the budgeting process is over, we will use the normal appropriations process. Please keep reaching out with your concerns--our office has a running list of priorities reported by residents!

It has been hot outside and as the summer approaches, we know abandoned properties, damaged sidewalks, speeding cars, and overgrown grass issues are intensified. If you see these problems in your neighborhood, please report them to our office or to 3-1-1. We are aware of several abandoned properties and the ongoing issues with Schardein Cemetery. We are actively working with Codes and Regulations and Public Works to address these concerns in the most efficient way possible.

As always, please reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns. While the council will not meet again until July 12th, we will still be working!

TPCD Resolution

tpcd vote

A note from Councilwoman Parrish-Wright regarding The People's Consent Decree Resolution:

Just last night, the artist Kendrick Lamar performed the song "They Not Like Us" five times. I told my husband, with whom we have 9 kids total; being a mother sure has taught me that you have to repeat yourself.

Now, as a Councilwoman for 7 months, I'm repeating this... A true apology is changed behavior. LMPD is guilty and has been found guilty civically and historically again & again. We, as Louisville Metro Council, have a duty to our whole city, not only to support LMPD financially (because it is supposed to be a public good) but to hold them accountable. Only, there is no accountability without political will. This TPCD addresses documented harms, verified by the DOJ, the University of Louisville History of Policing Report, and the many victims who have witnessed and experienced abuse of power, corruption, discrimination, and death from biased practices. Police can't fund themselves, and they can not police themselves.

I understand that many of my colleagues have not experienced abuse or harm from LMPD and hope that they never do. I have, and so have too many others. Many of my colleagues had no issues giving LMPD more money, new cars, new helicopters, new surveillance equipment, and a 24-hourwellness center. The community is asking for a formal acknowledgement of documented harms by our police department to be reflected in our history books. Some of my colleagues say they had issues with the language. Those that hurt you can't tell you how to heal.  To those colleagues, I ask, how do you expect us to heal if you keep making excuses that stop us from moving forward together? It is possible to both support LMPD and hold them accountable when they are guilty like we do with everyone else. Let your vote reflect what the people of this city have asked for, and not your personal gain or pursuit of other  goals.

Finally, those who choose to block legislation I propose because they think I am using my seat as an opportunity to run for Mayor, I have not yet made a decision to run for another office, despite many folks asking me to. I am focused on the concerns of District 3 & our city.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, emailed,  called & signed the petition.
