Public comment period opened on proposed annual air monitoring network plan

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet has published and made available for public comment a draft of the 2024 Kentucky Annual Ambient Air Monitoring Network Plan.   The plan provides an annual overview of all air monitoring sites operated by government agencies in Kentucky, including the network in Louisville Metro operated by the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (APCD). It includes details like location of monitoring sites, sampling and analysis methods, operating schedule, and more.  APCD’s air monitoring network uses five sites throughout the city to annually collect tens of millions of data points on Louisville’s air quality. The data collected through the network are used to determine if Louisville is meeting national air quality standards and to provide health information like the Air Quality Index (AQI) through tools like APCD’s Louisville Air Watch and US EPA’s AirNow.gov  The data are also used for research, to support APCD’s regulatory work, to further educate the public on local air quality, and to inform federal, state, and local policy making.  The work of APCD’s air monitoring scientists includes equipment operation, maintenance and repair, data review & analysis, chemistry, site maintenance, meteorology, and more. They’re out in rain, snow, or shine, and intensive procedures are always in place to ensure reliability of data and equipment.   The plan includes all monitoring network components required by EPA, as well as equipment that goes beyond federal requirements, including:  A device called an automated gas chromatograph (auto-GC) that monitors toxic air pollutants in near-real time, located at APCD’s Algonquin Parkway monitoring site.  New equipment to monitor for hydrogen sulfide, a colorless gas that is the primary odor-causing compound in sewer gas, located at APCD’s Algonquin Parkway monitoring site.   An air sensor collocation shelter that allows community scientists to deploy and test their own air sensors alongside APCD's regulatory-grade monitoring equipment, located at APCD’s Cannons Lane air monitoring site.  Other local air monitoring work not in the plan include a forthcoming air pollution monitoring study at various locations in west Louisville that is part of a larger project focusing on air pollution and health, particularly in the areas surrounding the Rubbertown industrial area, and support of EPA equipment research projects in and around west Louisville.  Data from APCD’s air monitoring network are made available in real-time through Louisville Air Watch at louisvilleky.gov/air and reports are made available on the APCD website’s data page.   The proposed monitoring plan and instructions for making a public comment can be found on the APCD’s Proposed Actions webpage at the link below. Metro Animal Services, Kroger, and Councilman Scott Reed Announce Donation Drive to Help Shelter Animals

Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS) is thrilled to unveil a partnership with Kroger for a Pet Supply Drive benefiting local shelter animals. Scheduled to run from June 3rd –17th, this collaborative effort highlights MAS's commitment to reuniting lost pets with their owners, decreasing the population of unwanted animals, and preventing instances of nuisance and dangerous animal encounters within our community.

District 16 Louisville Metro Councilman Scott Reed joined MAS and Kroger to promote the effort. “I am proud to join MAS and Kroger to assist in this partnership, which encourages a more compassionate, responsible, and safe community for people and our beloved pets,” he said.

Donation items like puppy pads, dog/cat food and treats can be conveniently purchased and deposited into specially designated bins at select Kroger locations throughout the area. For added convenience, items can also be acquired and delivered to MAS, 3528 Newburg Rd, directly through the Kroger App. Contributions can also be made directly to Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS).

Funds raised through this initiative will be earmarked through FOMAS to support free microchipping and spaying/neutering services provided by MAS. These essential services not only facilitate the safe return of lost pets to their families but also play a pivotal role in addressing the issue of stray animal overpopulation in our community.

Metro residents can help prevent mosquito bites and breeding grounds

You have likely already heard the buzz informing you that mosquito season is officially here. To protect Jefferson County residents from diseases the pests can carry, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) is out in the community actively treating known breeding grounds, trapping mosquitoes and testing them for diseases such as West Nile virus, St. Louis Encephalitis virus, La Cosse Encephalitis virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.  

Last year, LMPHW mosquito control specialists treated 14,500 catch basins to eliminate mosquito larvae as well as 8,982 miles of swampy areas and large areas of land known to collect standing water. The department also placed 148 mosquito traps around the city and county.  

To protect you and your family from mosquitoes, remember the three D’s: Drain, Defend, Dress.  

Drain: Prevent mosquito breeding grounds by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, toys, pet water dishes, discarded tires and drain birdbaths on a regular basis.  

Defend: Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions. Learn more information about choosing a repellent product that is right for you.

Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and closed-toed shoes when outdoors. Avoid perfumes and scented lotions.

Pothole Blitz On-going!

Metro Public Works' Roads & Operations crews is continuing the 2024 Pothole Blitz season, which features eleven teams deployed every day throughout Metro Louisville to keep the roads in safe condition. Metro makes pothole repairs year-round, averaging some 40,000 potholes per year. So far this year, Public Works has repaired more than 23,000 potholes, including those filled in the annual Blitz, a concentrated effort that began in March.
