Cannons Lane new sidewalk construction starts June 10!

Cannons Lane new sidewalk construction starts June 10!

The federally funded Cannons Lane new sidewalk project is scheduled to begin construction on June 10, 2024. Message boards and signs notifying the public were placed on June 3, 2024. The project will add 3,000 linear feet of new sidewalk along the western side of the roadway, a new curb and gutter system, as well as corresponding drainage pipes.

As part of the construction process, the southbound lane of Cannons Lane from Willis Ave. to Winchester Road will be detoured to Willis Ave., to Breckenridge Lane, to Winchester Road and back to Cannons Lane at Winchester. The northbound lane will remain open at a reduced speed (Posted speed signs will be reduced to 25 mph from 35 mph). The detour will remain in effect for the duration of the project. The construction process should take 3 – 4 months to complete.

We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that you slowdown in construction zones.

NOTE: There will be equipment showing up on site each week. An early detour pattern was established so people get used to it before the work starts.  It is generally poor practice to allow people to drive thru a part of a construction zone one day and then completely change it the next day when the ‘actual’ work begins. This is also for constituent safety.

CSX ROAD CLOSURES

Updates will be provided on this closure as the office receives them.

G’DAY Y’ALL! Two New Furry Aussies Coming to Louisville

Louisville Zoo

(attached photos courtesy of San Diego Zoo)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 30, 2024) – Two new Australians are making their way to Louisville — say “G’day y’all” to Dharuk and Telowie! The two male koalas will be coming from the San Diego Zoo in California. Dharuk and Telowie join the Louisville Zoo family indefinitely as part of an agreement with the Australian government. They will arrive later this June.

Dharuk, a 2-year-old, is named after an extinct Aboriginal language of the blue mountains, pronounced “da’ rook.” Meanwhile, 4-year-old Telowie (“tell ou-ee”), is named for the saltbush plant in Australia and means “old man saltbush by the waterhole.”

The two will take up residence at the foot of Glacier Run alongside fellow Australian species. Their abode is a renovated habitat near Lorikeet Landing that previously housed snowy owls and later, the Zoo’s red panda.

Louisville Zoo Director, Dan Maloney, previously served at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia and is excited to bring koalas back to Louisville. Koalas were temporarily featured at the Zoo during the 1980s and again in the early 2000s.

“Koalas are fantastic ambassadors for Australia, representing a truly unique species,” Maloney said. “I am excited to see families experience our friends from the ‘Land Down Under’!”

Following their arrival, the two koalas will go undergo a standard 30-day quarantine period in their prepared space, enabling them to be on exhibit sooner than the usual duration. Once on exhibit, they will be housed separately, as koalas are territorial and solitary in the wild.

Zoo guests will likely see the two new residents sleeping most days. Koalas almost exclusively eat eucalyptus leaves. This plant provides low-quality nutrition that takes time for koalas to process for energy. The eucalyptus that Dharuk and Telowie consume will be from one of just two eucalyptus farms in the U.S., both dedicated to supplying zoos.

The word “koala” is believed to originate from the Dharug language, spoken by Aboriginal people in Australia. “Koala” means “no drink,” which may be a reference to the marsupial’s low water intake. These animals stay hydrated through the water content in the eucalyptus leaves that form the bulk of their diet.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened species lists koalas as decreasing in the vanishing wild. The two main threats for koalas are human development and subsequent habitat destruction.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Spring/summer hours are 10 a.m. ─ 5 p.m. (stay until 6 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Zoo will close early on Friday, June 7, enter 10 a.m. – 2p.m. (exit by 3 p.m.). Visit louisvillezoo.org for more info.

Whitehall to Offer Pinot’s Palette Class

Whitehall to Offer Pinot’s Palette Class

Louisville, KY. – Whitehall is pleased to announce it will offer a class taught by the instructors from Pinot’s Palette in St. Matthews as part of its Whitehall Wednesday series. The award-winning local artists from Pinot’s Palette will bring all the supplies needed as they lead students through the creation of a 16 x 20 oil on canvas painting entitled The Magic Hour, which they will take home at the end of the evening. The class will be held on Wednesday, June 26, at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $75 per student. Space is limited and reservations are required. Students may register here:  https://www.historicwhitehall.org/whitehall-wednesdays.

In the Whitehall Wednesday series, Whitehall House and Gardens will host educational workshops for adults that focus on plants within the disciplines of art, gardening, science and forestry on the last Wednesday of every month, starting at 6pm. We partner with flower farmers, florists, arborists, horticulturalists and naturalists to bring fresh new programming to plant lovers in Louisville.

Proceeds from the program will benefit Whitehall, a historic house and estate garden owned and operated by the not-for-profit Historic Homes Foundation.  Originally built in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse, the house was transformed in 1909 into the iconic Classical style mansion we know today that epitomizes the stately beauty of early twentieth-century architecture.  At just under ten acres, Whitehall’s grounds offer the public multiple special gardens that are a horticultural treasure to the community.

Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern delivering remarks

Mayor Greenberg Provides Weekly Update

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 11, 2024) – In Louisville’s NuLu neighborhood, Mayor Craig Greenberg held his weekly update and announced the $13 million East Market Streetscape Project is officially underway, with an estimated completion date of 2025. The Mayor was joined by Metro Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern and Public Works team members to share progress on the work, as well as celebrate the upcoming National Waste and Recycling Workers Appreciation Week. The Mayor also recognized Charlie Horn of Paul Davis Restoration Company as today’s Louisvillian Doing Good.

“Louisville’s Public Works team is essential to our city, ensuring our sidewalks and streets are safe and updated, our waste is picked up, our lights are on and working and so much more,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg. “Today we’re recognizing these dedicated Louisvillians and all they do every day to make our city safer, stronger, healthier and more beautiful for everyone across our city.”

East Market Streetscape Project

Mayor Greenberg and Metro Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern were joined by Jesse Bray, senior project manager of JLL Project and Development Services, to share the $13 million East Market Streetscape project has officially started – delivering on a decades-old promise to complete the project which will transform the vehicular and pedestrian spaces into a modern, urban center for people, bikes and cars.

“Today we’re delivering on a decades-old promise to make this vibrant neighborhood in Louisville safer, more accessible and more beautiful for the thousands of Louisvillians and visitors who visit this area daily,” said Mayor Greenberg. “This is a transformational project that our Public Works team is committed to getting done as we all work together to move our city in a new direction by listening to our people and delivering results.”

“Anything worthwhile takes time, and I am so excited to announce the start of this amazing project,” said Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern. “In addition to improving roadway safety in the corridor, this transformative project will feature numerous improvements, including new, wider and more accessible sidewalks, a new separated and protected bicycle track, traffic signal upgrades, more trees and landscaping, and new pavement; making East Market Street a safer, more inviting environment for all road users.”

The project is made possible through a partnership between Louisville Metro Government and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). The East Market Streetscape Project master plan was completed in 2011 along with the Downtown Connectivity Study, which was commissioned by the Louisville Downtown Partnership (LDP).

The project will enhance roadway safety, create wider and more accessible sidewalks, implement a new separated and protected bicycle track, upgrade traffic signals, plant more trees, provide more landscaping, new pavement and more.

The contract to build the project was awarded to PACE Contracting in May, and Strand Associates Inc. was contracted to design the project. To view the design plans, click here.
