Urban Forestry Master Plan Launch

TreesLouisville will be coordinating the Urban Forestry Master Plan Project for Louisville Metro that will inform the processes for creating a robust and sustainable urban forest.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our efforts in developing an Urban Forestry Master Plan (UFMP). The UFMP is a community-driven strategic initiative aimed at investing in the long-term well-being of Louisville’s trees and its people.

Over the coming decades, this plan will serve as a roadmap for prioritizing, preserving, and expanding our city's tree canopy. The plan will ensure that we are using the best management practices for air and water quality improvement, stormwater management, urban heat island effects, and social cohesion.

We are looking for 100 (or more!) individuals to participate in the Urban Forestry Advisory Group that will hold three workshops in late spring/early summer 2024. These sessions will delve into current conditions, challenges, and future goals for Louisville's urban forest. The "Discovery Through Self-Assessment" workshops will involve data analysis, discussions on challenges and priorities, and collaborative brainstorming, all facilitated by experts.

Equity Council Positions:

For those in historically excluded areas or neighborhoods redlined in the 1930s, we have reserved 10-15 positions on the Advisory Group for an Equity Council. Members will contribute their unique perspectives and ideas, guiding the development of strategies and policies. We understand the importance of this participation and offer stipends to cover transportation, childcare, and other costs to facilitate your involvement. Sign up here:

University of Louisville & Metro Louisville Government Collaboration on Digital Literacy Training Program

The University of Louisville’s Digital Transformation Center is honored to be a part of the Metro Louisville’s American Rescue Plan grant.  Our program aims to upskill over 100 community trainers across all 26 Metro Louisville Districts. As part of the program these 100 community trainers will then train at least 10 community members.  Our mission is clear - to create a digitally competent community.

Community trainers will be empowered with free training curriculum, materials, and support through the digital literacy program.  Our comprehensive curriculum zeroes in on essential digital skills, including Virtual Collaboration Tools (Microsoft Teams), Conversational Artificial Intelligence (Chat GPT), Forms Data Collection (Microsoft Forms), and Data Analytics (Microsoft Power BI) and training skills. These skills are not just about individual growth; they're the building blocks for creating a digitally proficient community.

Your Questions Answered: Learn More About WIC

  • WIC – What is it? WIC stands for women, infants, and children. Our WIC program is a grant-funded program that will celebrate 50 years this year. This program provides supplemental foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare and social services for income eligible families
  • Who is eligible? Our program is for pregnant and post-partum women and children up to the age of 5. An person or household at or below 185% of the poverty level qualifies for the WIC program. Some people who have Medicaid health insurance will qualify regardless of income status.
  • How many women, infants, children do we serve on average each year? Last year, our program served over 16,500 participants across our four clinics.
  • What does the nutrition consist of? Infants can receive formula, baby foods, and cash value for fruits and vegetables. Participants aged two and up receive low fat dairy, whole grain products, cash value for fruits and vegetables, and a protein option like beans or peanut butter.
  • Where can people find WIC-approved foods? Participants can use their WIC cards at Kroger, Walmart, Meijer, Save-a-Lot, and a few smaller state-approved vendors.

Who do families meet with at their WIC appointments? Nutrition educators and dietitians work with individuals and families participating in our WIC program. They provide education and information about the basics of nutrition. They provide families with the tools and knowledge they need to eat healthily before during and after pregnancy. Our group of trained team members can also identify possible delays in child development, undercover additional needs outside our scope of practice, and make necessary referrals to outside programs.

Evolve502 Scholarship

Evolve502 is grateful for the support of Metro Government and Metro Council in making access to college easier for students and families in Louisville. We are closing in on meeting the $3 million match from the FY2023 Metro budget and hope to cross the finish line this spring. To date we’ve raised more than $25 million toward our $50 million goal to offer a generation of students a tuition-free postsecondary education.

We wanted to send you a quick update/progress report on Evolve502’s effort to enroll JCPS graduates in a two-year tuition-free postsecondary education opportunity. In the first three years Evolve502 enrolled more than 1,500 JCPS graduates in college at Jefferson or Simmons College of Kentucky; 21 of those students live in district 9 and 5 of those are from the class of 2023. Creating access to postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce are critical to our community’s future success and Evolve502 is working with students, families and partners every day.

If you know a family with a student graduating from a JCPS high school in 2024 encourage them to apply. Students and families interested in exploring their next steps toward a postsecondary credential, certificate or degree can receive resources and support from Evolve502. More than 1,300 students from the class of 2024 have applied already. Apply Here: (https://evolve502.org/apply/).
