Have You Noticed the Trash? Be a Part of the Solution!

Whether it's Operation Brightside or Adopt-A-Highway, there are ways the community can pitch in.

highwat

The Adopt-A-Highway program is a statewide effort to reduce roadside litter and to keep Kentucky’s highways beautiful. Litter-free roads promote a clean environment, foster civic pride and save taxpayer dollars.

Kentucky has participated in the International Adopt-A-Highway Program since 1988. We have 26,000 miles of State Primary, State Secondary, State Supplemental and Rural Secondary Roads. We do not cover any interstates or parkways. Currently there are nearly 600 Adopt-A-Highway Groups in the state, focusing on over 2,100 miles of road. With more involvement, we can maintain more roads.

Adopt-A-Highway Program Information:

  • There is no fee associated with adopting a roadway.
  • Any permanently established business, association, community or public organization, or government entity can adopt a stretch of highway.
  • Participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program is on a volunteer basis. KYTC does not compensate groups or individual participants.
  • Participants must be at least 13 years of age. Anyone under age 18 must be supervised by an adult.
  • Groups agree to adopt a minimum of two miles for a period of two years and may renew the contract at the end of the two years.
  • Groups commit to at least three cleanups a year, which may coincide with KYTC's annual cleanup events: Spring Clean, Summer Scrub, and Fall Sweep.
  • Cleanups involve both sides of the road within the adopted section.
  • KYTC provides volunteer groups with safety vests, trash bags, and warning signs.
  • All groups must review the Roadside Safety Brochure with all participants before each cleanup.
  • Filled trash bags will be picked up by KYTC Maintenance Crews.
  • One sign will be installed on the adopted roadway with the name of the organization or group.
  • Groups are to complete a Cleanup Summary Form after each cleanup detailing their efforts.

Neighborhood Clean-up

Our neighborhood cleanups provide a way for community members to help keep Louisville clean and green all throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to foster civic pride and community engagement. Many groups use this as a team building activity within their place of employment, neighborhoods, place of worship, school and other community or service groups. No group is too small, whether it be one person or one hundred, all of our volunteers make an impact.

If you would like to host a Neighborhood Cleanup registering is easy! Just fill out the Neighborhood Cleanup Registration Form below or, if you would prefer to download the form and fax or email it to us, you can do so here – Download Neighborhood Cleanup Registration Form

To organize a neighborhood cleanup with Operation Brightside, click this link.

Adopt-A-Mile

The Brightside Adopt-A-Mile program allows groups to adopt one-mile stretches of city roadways and to commit to keeping them clean for the one-year adoption period. Brightside welcomes any local community organization, such as civic, social, or school groups, as well as religious, businesses or neighborhood organizations to participate in the Adopt-A-Mile program. All groups that participate are given a certificate to be displayed that recognizes their commitment to helping keep Louisville clean and green. For a sponsorship commitment, Brightside will provide a sign within the mile long corridor with your business or group name to recognize the adoption. Please fill out the form in this link.

Flu Cases on the Rise

flu

Is Jefferson County seeing an increase in influenza (flu) cases?

How can you protect yourself from the flu?

  • People who have the flu can spread it to others. Flu is spread by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or inhaled into the lungs. There are everyday actions you can take to protect yourself from flu: avoid close contact with people who are sick, wash your hands often with warm water and soap, use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol if you aren't able to wash your hands, and get your flu vaccine. Wearing an N95 mask also offers protection. Viruses in the air can spread between people more easily indoors than outdoors. Improving air quality, such as opening windows or using air purifiers, can help reduce the amount of virus you are exposed to.

Is it too late to get vaccinated for the flu?

  • It’s not too late to get your flu vaccine. The vaccine will trigger your immune system to produce antibodies to protect against flu. It can take about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop.

Can adults get COVID and flu vaccine at the same time?

  • Yes. Also, if you are eligible for the RSV vaccine, it can be given at the same time as flu and COVID vaccines.

To learn more information about flu and for a listing of flu vaccine providers, please visit their website or vaccines.gov. Vaccines are given by appointment at our Newburg and Dixie clinics. If you have questions or need assistance, call 502-574-5380. Language assistance is available.

Gun Violence Dashboard is Now Live

gun violence

The city’s new “Metro Gun Violence Dashboard” is now live on OSHN’s Louisvilleky.gov website.

The dashboard is a real-time, comprehensive reporting tool that will expand government transparency and will aim to create more collaborative work opportunities with and within the Louisville community.

The dashboard is a collaborative project between OSHN and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and was funded with a $100,000 competitive grant from the national Everytown for Safety Support Fund.

The dashboard will use data from Mark 43, LMPD’s record management system and will show a variety of reporting elements. For example, it will show maps and trends on where shots are fired, where homicides and non-fatal shootings happen, literal neighborhood and block reports, and historic, comparative, and detailed data starting from the year 2010.

It will give anonymized information on victims of gun violence, trend reports and provides an array of measurements, including, for example, what is shown as the likeliest or most common times and/or days for violence.

Visit the LIVE Dashboard Here!
