Louisville Free Public Library partners with Scripps National Spelling Bee to host regional competition     

Louisville, Ky. (December 7, 2023) – The Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) has partnered with Scripps National Spelling Bee to be a regional host of the Spelling Bee in 2024. The regional competition will be held at the Main Library, 301 York Street, on Saturday, March 9, and will bring together students from local elementary and middle school to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. 

Launched in 1925, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program, reaching millions of students across the country. By inspiring the exploration of words, the Bee encourages lifelong curiosity, celebrates academic achievement, and enriches communities.

The winner of the very first National Spelling Bee in 1925, sponsored by the Courier-Journal, was from Louisville. For years, the Louisville region has been without a local sponsor and host. LFPL’s regional sponsorship this year is made possible through the generous support of the Library Foundation.

“The Scripps Spelling Bee is a fantastic complement to the Library’s ongoing work to develop kids’ reading skills. When we found out we had the opportunity to host the regional competition we knew we had to do it,” said Library Director Lee Burchfield. “I’m so appreciative that the Library Foundation leadership felt the same way and stepped up to ensure we could make it happen. I can’t wait.”

The Louisville region encompasses 28 counties in north-central Kentucky and southern Indiana. Schools interested in competing should register online through Scripps National Spelling Bee at spellingbee.com. Individuals and organizations interested in supporting the Library’s participation in the Bee can donate to the Library Foundation online at LFPLFoundation.org, or by calling (502) 754-1702.

NEIGHBORHOOD INSITUTE

Center For Neighborhoods is now accepting applications for the Spring 2024 Neighborhood Institute!

The Neighborhood Institute is a leadership education program designed to equip neighborhood leaders with the skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood, homeowner, and condo associations. Classes meet every Saturday, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Center For Neighborhoods Offices (1126 Berry Blvd. Suite 300), for 11 consecutive weeks (January 13th, 2024 – March  23rd, 2024), followed by a Graduation Celebration on March 30th. A continental breakfast is provided each week. There is no charge to attend, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 pm on January 5th, 2024. 

The Lucille Leggett Neighborhood Institute Spring 2024 is open to all neighborhoods, Metro Council Districts, and the whole community.

URBAN FORESTRY MASTER PLAN

TreesLouisville will be coordinating the Urban Forestry Master Plan Project for Louisville Metro that will inform the processes for creating a robust and sustainable urban forest.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our efforts in developing an Urban Forestry Master Plan (UFMP). The UFMP is a community-driven strategic initiative aimed at investing in the long-term well-being of Louisville’s trees and its people.

Over the coming decades, this plan will serve as a roadmap for prioritizing, preserving, and expanding our city's tree canopy. The plan will ensure that we are using the best management practices for air and water quality improvement, stormwater management, urban heat island effects, and social cohesion. 

Why Urban Forestry Matters:

• Urban Forest Definition: Refers to all trees within a city, spanning both public and privately-owned lands.
• Tree Canopy: The shaded area of a city covered by trees. In Louisville, 39% of the city is graced by trees, providing numerous health benefits to the community.

We are looking for 100 (or more!) individuals to participate in the Urban Forestry Advisory Group that will hold three workshops in late spring/early summer 2024. These sessions will delve into current conditions, challenges, and future goals for Louisville's urban forest. The "Discovery Through Self-Assessment" workshops will involve data analysis, discussions on challenges and priorities, and collaborative brainstorming, all facilitated by experts.

Equity Council Positions:

For those in historically excluded areas or neighborhoods redlined in the 1930s, we have reserved 10-15 positions on the Advisory Group for an Equity Council. Members will contribute their unique perspectives and ideas, guiding the development of strategies and policies. We understand the importance of this participation and offer stipends to cover transportation, childcare, and other costs to facilitate your involvement.

The Louisville Free Public Library is so excited to begin the much-needed renovation and 4,500-square-foot expansion of the Portland Library (architect’s rendering above). The final construction drawings are now complete and the construction manager has released the request for bids to subcontractors. Since it will take several weeks to receive and review the bid responses, the Portland Library will now remain open through the end of September (we will not close on August 31, as previously announced). A group of young men from W.E.B Dubois Academy participate in our Trash for Cash program. They collected 52 bags of litter along W Market St from Northwestern Pkwy to S 24^th St. They did a fantastic job! I just wanted to share these pictures with you.

• If you dial 911 by mistake, please stay on the line and explain to the call taker. We are required to call back any 911 hang up calls the Communication Center receives. If the hang up is from a land line or business phone, we will send police to do a welfare check if no one answers on the callback.
• We are able to connect to an interpreter service if caller needs to communication in another language.
• Please remember to have patience when calling for an emergency at a public place or roadway or during a severe weather event . The call volume will increase and call takers will be processing calls as fast and efficiently as they can.
