Happy Holidays from the District 9 Office

As we look forward to New Year’s Day 2024, we want to take this opportunity to wish every resident of the 9th District a very happy holiday season.

Whatever your faith and wherever you are originally from, we are pleased you have chosen to make the 9th District your home and we hope you have an opportunity to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy friends and family during this time.

It has been our pleasure to serve you this year as we have endeavored to provide clear communication and timely constituent services during 2023.  We are always looking to improve and welcome any feedback you may have for us by email Andrew.owen@louisvilleky.gov / jasmine.presley@louisvilleky.gov or by phone at (502) 574-1109.

We are pleased to announce Jasmine will be taking maternity leave in early 2024, and in anticipation of that momentous occasion, it has been our pleasure to welcome Regina Garr as an Administrative Assistant in the District 9 office.  If you have not yet interacted with Regina, we can assure you, District 9 will be well taken care of in Regina’s capable hands.  Her email address is regina.garr@louisvilleky.gov if you would like to send her a welcoming note.

Whether you say, “Merry Christmas,” “Happy St. Nicholas Day,” or “Happy Hannukah,”  or you celebrate Bodhi Day, Immaculate Conception Day, the Feast Day of our Lady Guadalupe, Yule, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, or Zarathosht Diso, December is a time of reflection and celebration for people all over the world.

We wish you and yours peace and hope in 2024.

Andrew & Jasmine

A Message from Major Grissom

major grissom

“2023 is nearly over and overall, the 5th Division has had a successful year. We are on track to have about 10% reduction in overall crime. Violent crime will be down, but we did experience a high number of homicides. Some of that is hard to control but we’ve made progress and 2024 looks promising.

I would like to send a special thank you to Collegiate School for hosting the first, “Meet Your Beat Cop” event. We had a good turnout and a fun time. Collegiate has been a tremendous friend to LMPD and I look forward to working with them in 2024.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!”

January Anti-Racism Challenge!

anti racism logo

As we look forward to the New Year, many of us are thinking of positive change and new habits we want to develop. The free, 4-week Anti-Racism Challenge can help begin the new year with hope and action for a better world. It’s sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro’s Lean Into Louisville, and the Earth and Spirit Center and begins on January 5.

This is how it works -- once a week in January, participants will receive an email with a list of 10-12 anti-racism activities. These range from reading an article, contacting an elected official, watching a film or viewing an exhibit by Black artists, patronizing a Black business, etc. We ask participants to choose and complete 3 of the listed activities. The purpose is to keep us all focused and active in challenging racism. This is a personal Challenge -- no one needs to report back to Listen Learn Act. Those who wish to participate simply provide their email address (we never share anyone's information) and that puts them on the list to receive the ARC email each week. Here is the link to sign up: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sl/mhL87rL

Evolve502 Scholarship

evolve502

Evolve502 is grateful for the support of Metro Government and Metro Council in making access to college easier for students and families in Louisville. We are closing in on meeting the $3 million match from the FY2023 Metro budget and hope to cross the finish line this spring. To date we’ve raised more than $25 million toward our $50 million goal to offer a generation of students a tuition-free postsecondary education.

We wanted to send you a quick update/progress report on Evolve502’s effort to enroll JCPS graduates in a two-year tuition-free postsecondary education opportunity. In the first three years Evolve502 enrolled more than 1,500 JCPS graduates in college at Jefferson or Simmons College of Kentucky; 21 of those students live in district 9 and 5 of those are from the class of 2023. Creating access to postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce are critical to our community’s future success and Evolve502 is working with students, families and partners every day.

If you know a family with a student graduating from a JCPS high school in 2024 encourage them to apply. Students and families interested in exploring their next steps toward a postsecondary credential, certificate or degree can receive resources and support from Evolve502. More than 1,300 students from the class of 2024 have applied already. Apply Here: (https://evolve502.org/apply/).

Closure of I-64 West Scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 17, in Jefferson County

KY_Transportation_Cabinet

KYTC crews to perform lighting repairs in the Cochran Tunnel

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 14, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that all lanes on a section of Interstate 64 West in Jefferson County will be closed on Sunday, December 17.

The I-64 West closure scheduled for Sunday, December 17, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., will begin at the I-264 interchange (mile point 12.6) and extend to Grinstead Drive (mile point 8.1). The ramps from I-264 East and West to I-64 West will also be closed.

The closure is necessary as KYTC crews work to repair lighting in the westbound Cochran Hill Tunnel.

Signs notifying drivers of the upcoming work and detour route will be placed in the area. Motorists should adjust for increased travel times and expect delays while traveling the detour route. Signed detour route (depending on destination): I-264 East to I-71 South, then reconnect to I-64 West.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5.

TARC Launches Effort to Reduce Missed Service

tarc launch

Reliable and predictable bus service is the most important priority for TARC’s customers. The vast majority of scheduled TARC service goes out every day. But there’s been a small increase recently in missed service. And when even a small minority doesn’t go out that creates inconvenience for our customers and that’s not acceptable. To fix that, TARC is introducing a three-phased approach over the next nine months to reduce missed service.

The first phase starts immediately, with utilizing TARC bus operator trainers to cover short, peak-time only shifts as part of their field training work and improved communication to TARC riders via TARC text alerts when particular bus runs are likely to be canceled. The second and third phases will be this winter and next summer, during the scheduled January and June service adjustments. Those phases will include shift adjustments and the introduction of more consistent full-day schedules. Later in 2024, TARC will also complete the comprehensive upgrade of CAD/AVL hardware on our buses which will mean more reliable real-time communication to customers about what’s happening. You can hear some more about our efforts from Director of Marketing & Communications, Alex Posorske.
